The '''Moonsong''' (月守の歌, called the "Tsukimori Song" in fan translations) was one of the [[Moonsounds]] performed by the [[Guardians (FF4)|Guardians]] of [[Rogetsu Isle]], on the organ in the [[Lunar Odeum]]. ==Fatal Frame II==
Masumi was sent to the Minakami region to survey the land that would be submerged once the [[Minakami Dam]] construction was complete. While studying the land, Masumi accidentally stumbled into the [[Minakami Village|Lost Village]] and became trapped. He shifted the focus of his research to the history and rituals of Minakami in the desperate attempt to escape. Several fragments of his research can be found scattered throughout the village.

Although Masumi was reported missing, the authorities called off the search for him after only ten days. Masumi's girlfriend, Miyako Sudo, believed that he was still alive and went searching for him. The two found each other at some point, but Miyako somehow got hurt shortly after. Masumi left her in the [[Osaka House]] while he went to find a way out. Having learned that the [[Kurosawa Family|Kurosawa family]] presided over the village's rituals, he directed his search to the [[Kurosawa House]]. While in the Kurosawa house, Masumi was attacked by the [[Kusabi]] in a hallway. He attempted to hide in the Storeroom of the Great Hall and died there holding [[Bloody Ring|the ring]] he planned to give to Miyako.

Unable to accept this fate and longing to give Miyako the ring, Masumi's ghost returned to the Osaka House. Miyako followed him into the back room, unaware that he was dead. As she approached, he pushed her to the floor and strangled her. His ghost, Unrest in Piece, continues to wander the village calling out to Miyako. 

===Bloody Ring Sidequest===

==Story==
[[Amane]] and her best friend [[Hisame]] are walking together when Hisame brings up Amane's selection as a [[Handmaiden]]. Hisame is impressed and thinks it's a prestigious thing, but Amane disagrees, saying that she was only chosen because she wouldn't hesitate to mess up the sacred rituals.

As they walk, Hisame spots a cat lying by the roots of a tree. Seeing that its paw is broken, Hisame wants to take it home to nurse it back to health, but Amane quickly breaks its neck, explaining that it would only have suffered otherwise. They take the cat to a clearing in the woods, a place where flowers bloom even in the darkness, to bury it in a place where it can "sleep in peace." This is the first time Hisame has seen a dead body, and she admits that she was afraid at first, but she is impressed by Amane's composure and intends to follow her example.

Soon after, Amane leaves home to begin her Handmaiden training. On the first day, she makes origami figures with a woman at the shrine, thinking that the atmosphere is much less strict than she was expecting. The woman then takes the two figures and tells Amane to think of them as her mother and father as she tears them to pieces. The woman then tells her to pull herself together, as hesitant Handmaidens are useless.

Meanwhile, Hisame comes across a girl crying over a sick bird. She comforts the girl and breaks the bird's neck, explaining that as Amane did, it's better to end its suffering. But the bird doesn't die as quickly as planned, and Hisame is distressed at the thought that she caused it to suffer more. She wishes Amane had been there to show her what to do. The girl then offers to be Hisame's friend, and Hisame happily agrees so that they can practice together and improve.

Amane's training continues, and one day, after study, the woman gives her a letter from Hisame. In the letter, Hisame tells her about [[Shigure]], the new friend she made. She then tells Amane to think of her when training gets hard to bear, but Amane doesn't think the training is hard at all - everyone at the [[Kuze Shrine|manor]] is kind to her, always smiling. Amane is happy to be in a place where she can be helpful, and even her cold heart can begin to stir.

Soon after, Amane is allowed to visit the village for three days. She wonders if she will return to her old self as Hisame comes running up, proclaiming that Amane hasn't changed. Hisame introduces her to Shigure, and the three girls go into the woods to visit the cat's grave. When they arrive, Amane is shocked to see how many graves now fill the clearing.

Another girl, [[Minamo]], is also there, torturing a rabbit. Hisame gently admonishes her for making it suffer, and Shigure goes over to show her how to kill it quickly. Hisame is proud to tell Amane how much she and Shigure have improved, even though Minamo is still young and not very proficient.

The girls realise they can no longer tell the gravestones apart. Minamo suggests drawing faces on the gravestones to distinguish them from the others, and the three of them set to work enthusiastically. Amane is the only one who doesn't join in their laughter. Not long afterwards, the other three girls are selected as Handmaidens.

The [[Yuki-onna]] (雪女) is a [[yōkai]] that appears in Japanese folklore. Yuki-onna, which literally translates as "snow woman," was believed to be an evil entity feared before the 1700s. This was for a good reason, for the yuki-onna is the personification of the genuine danger faced by anyone unlucky enough to get caught out in the severe winter snowstorms of Japan. When spring had come, and winter snows had melted, it was not uncommon for villagers to find the frozen corpses of those who ventured up the mountains or those who went missing. The legends she appears in were probably developed as cautionary tales for those considering traveling through the mountains during the winter. The people of northern Japan were firm believers in the yuki-onna and might be where most of her tales originated. Like the snow in her name, the yuki-onna can be a beautiful sight but can also be a ruthless killer.

==Appearance==
The yuki-onna appears on dark, snowy nights and during snowstorms in isolated or mountainous areas where lost or weary travelers were located. The yuki-onna is typically described as a tall, gorgeous woman with unnaturally pale skin and long black hair. What makes her truly stand out, though, is that she is said to have blue lips, wears a white kimono (which is typically reserved for the dead and seen on [[yūrei]]), and her eyes are said to strike terror into anyone who gazes into them. As she walks, she is said to leave no footprints behind. In some tales, she is described as being completely nude, having skin so white that she can blend in with the snowy landscape where only her black hair and facial features are visible. In other legends, the yuki-onna is said to be void of feet altogether, another feature typically seen in yūrei.

==Evolution of the Yuki-onna Legends Over Time==
In the oldest legends, the yuki-onna was portrayed as a genuinely ruthless killer that was indiscriminate in who she killed and was satisfied to watch her victims die. Her favored method of killing was to leave her victim as a frozen corpse using her frosty breath to freeze them instantly. When she found a lost traveler, she would appear and offer to help lead them to a safe place until the storm had passed. She would then lead them far off the trail, and when she felt they would have no hope of finding their way back, she would suddenly disappear, leaving the helpless traveler to die of exposure. A unique method the yuki-onna uses to kill her victims is similar to those seen in [[ubume]] legends. She would manifest herself as a woman holding what appears to be a child, asking people to take the child with them to safety. When a well-intentioned soul would take the "child" from her, they instantly became frozen into place. The yuki-onna seems to have some control over the element of wind. In some stories, she invades homes isolated from the village by blowing their doors open and killing them as they sleep.

In some parts of Japan, the yuki-onna is considered the yūrei of a woman who died in some manner in the snows of winter. These spirits are believed to return whenever there is snow, which is similar to how the [[funayūrei]] returns only during stormy weather at sea. It is thought that sutras can be read to appease these spirits and prevent them from returning during snowstorms.

As time went on, the perception of the yuki-onna began to change. The legends began to portray the yuki-onna with a compassionate side that made her, in some ways, feel more human. She would spare certain people's lives for various reasons, which included them being too young, too old, or too good-looking to kill. If she chose to spare their lives, it was usually required that the person never speaks of seeing her to anyone, lest she comes back for the kill that was rightfully hers. The yuki-onna would also take on a human form when she liked a strikingly handsome male she had spared to marry and produce offspring with him (as can be seen in Lafcadio Hearn's story 'Yuki-onna'). She would accompany this man in life, quietly and happily, until he either died of old age or gave up the secret he promised long ago never to tell. In this human form, the yuki-onna would appear to never truly age regardless of how harsh life she had, and her offspring would have very fair white skin.

In more modern legends, the yuki-onna took on vampiric overtones in which she would kill her victims by draining them of their blood or "life force." These legends of the yuki-onna were developed sometime after western influence was introduced to Japan (most likely sometime after 1854). Before the introduction of western culture, the Japanese had no concept of vampires or blood-sucking creatures. Only two Japanese stories include a vampire-like creature before western influence, the kappa, and a folktale known in English as "The Vampire Cat of Nabeshima." In other tales, the yuki-onna took on some of the characteristics of another folklore creature, the western succubus. She would tempt weak-willed men with her beautiful looks and convince them to kiss her or have sexual intercourse with her, after which she would drain them of their blood or leave them as ice-covered corpses.

Shigeto believed that the only way to save his daughter was to perform the ancient [[Kiraigou]], the original form of the Kagura. Working together with [[Souya Yomotsuki]], a master mask-maker of the [[Yomotsuki Family]], he began to research the ritual. Since the Kiraigou caused the [[Day Without Suffering]], which left the island in ruins, it had become taboo, and much of the lore surrounding it had been lost, but using the [[Camera Obscura]] created by [[Dr. Kunihiko Asou]], Shigeto was able to reveal fragments of the past. The photographs he took with the camera showed the melody needed to access the Underground Lunar Hall from the Antechamber<ref>''[[Souya's Note 2]]'', [[Fatal Frame IV]]</ref>, and the taboo Mask of the Lunar Eclipse created by [[Souetsu Yomotsuki]].

As the time of the lunar eclipse grew closer, You returned from the mainland and joined Shigeto and Souya's efforts, trying to recreate the [[Lunar Melody|lunar melody]] from ancient documents and personally selecting the five girls who would perform as [[Kanade]] in the Kiraigou, while Sakuya was to perform as the [[Utsuwa]]. However, the ritual ultimately failed. The mask shattered, Sakuya fell into a coma, and the five Kanade lost their memories. Shigeto had Sakuya moved to the [[Shrine of Mourning]], and observed the girls in the [[Moonbeam Well]], until they were rescued two weeks later by detective [[Choushiro Kirishima]].

It is unclear what Shigeto did in the two years following the Kiraigou. He denied all involvement in the kidnappings, and when another man confessed to the crime in a suicide note,<ref>''[[Choushiro's Handbook]]: [[CH:Shigeto Haibara|Shigeto Haibara]]'', [[Fatal Frame IV]]</ref> the police ceased their investigations. The hospital remained open, and [[Shrine Guards|islanders]] serving the Haibara family tended Sakuya as she hovered between life and death. Shigeto's fate on the Day Without Suffering is not mentioned, but it can be assumed he [[Blooming|Bloomed]] and died along with the rest of the islanders.

As a ghost, he appears in two forms: a vanishing ghost in standard work attire and an attacking ghost in ritual attire, including a mask. The latter occurs only in Choushiro's [[Chapter 10: Lingering Cherry Blossoms|final chapter]], in the basement of the hospital, alongside [[Masanobu Fuchiki]] and [[Michihiko Ikushima]].

The four [[Headless Priests|priests]] that care for her wear masks to prevent her from becoming attached to them, and therefore the living world. She is designated certain days in which she is allowed outside, though which days are not clear. Overall, the maiden must be kept completely detached from the world and must be willing to die. If she retains the will to live at the time of her death, or is emotionally conflicted, the Strangling Ritual will fail.

==The Ritual==
When it is time for the ritual, the Rope Shrine Maiden is taken from her [[Dungeon|cell]] to the [[Moon Well]] to purify herself in the moonlight. She then enters the basement through a door that only she is allowed to use, located at the bottom of the Moon Well.<ref>[[Research Scrap 8]], [[Fatal Frame]]</ref> The rest of the Himuro family must use the [[Demon Mouth]] entrance to access the basement. Both of these paths cross and lead to the [[Rope Altar|ceremony chamber]]. The [[Lord Himuro|family master]] leads the maiden, the priests, and the rest of the Himuro family down, while the priests walk alongside the maiden. 

There is a large pedestal with five wheels in the chamber, which ropes are attached to and pulled by. The Rope Shrine Maiden is put on the pedestal, and ropes are tied around her wrists, ankles, and neck. While [[Zero no Chouritsu]] was promoted as being the 'image song' for [[Fatal Frame IV]], fans were surprised to hear NOISE as the ending song during the first initial ending of the game. This caused confusion as to which song was actually the real song. It was revealed that, unlike previous games where Tsukiko Amano had only contributed one song, in this instance she contributed two.

NOISE is created as the ENDING SONG, and not the 'image song' or theme song to the game. Players can hear the song in the Easy and Normal endings.

The song was supposed to be part of Tsukiko Amano's ZERO album, however before publication Amano decided to pull the song on the basis that it didn't match up with the other songs contained within the album.

After Ren saves her on both occasions, her feelings towards him begin to change, and although up until that point she has been comfortable with the ambiguous relationship they have, she starts to consider the possibility of a more romantic one.

Later, when ghosts begin to congregate in [[Kurosawa's Antiques]], Rui is spirited away, and Ren goes after her. He finds her in the [[Watarai Residence]], inside a [[reliquary]], but when he finds her he has a strange hallucination in which she drags him into the box with her and he meets her in the [[House of Joining]], dressed as a bride.

Ren does not tell Rui about this hallucination, and in the [[Mount Hikami Cable Car|cable car]] on the way home, she makes a point of sitting beside him and leaning on his shoulder, indicating that she has made her decision. Ren, though still hesitant, cannot help smiling.

Afterwards, Rui is exhausted and spends the rest of the game asleep on the couch in the office at Kurosawa's Antiques. When Ren gets ready to go to Mount Hikami again, she is afraid he will choose one of the other brides over her, and sleepily asks him not to leave. He goes anyway, but in a post-ending cutscene, she wakes to find him sitting nearby, watching over her. When he starts to get up she reacts with alarm, and only relaxes when he reassures her he's not going anywhere.

After either nine days or two weeks (the in-game voiceover and the manual give different intervals), Miku follows her brother to [[Himuro Mansion]].

When Miku enters the mansion there is no sign of Mafuyu, except for their mother's old [[Camera Obscura|camera]], which has been abandoned in front of a mirror at the end of a long [[Rope Hallway|hallway]] full of hanging ropes. She finds herself trapped and unable to leave the terrifying house. As she searches for Mafuyu, Junsei Takamine and the rest of his party, she also finds herself beginning to succumb to the [[Rope Curse]]. Miku isn't alone; as she searches she is aided by a mysterious little [[White Kimono|girl]] in a white and orange kimono, and she begins to learn of her own family's connection to the mansion, and the [[Calamity]] that left it cursed and uninhabitable. After four nights of searching for clues, evading harmful ghosts and searching for pieces of an ancient [[Holy Mirror]], Miku finds her brother, and is able to free the spirits trapped within the Himuro Mansion.

Sadly, her struggles to get Mafuyu back are in vain, as he decides to stay with the [[Rope Shrine Maiden|Shrine Maiden]] [[Kirie Himuro|Kirie]]. Miku escapes the underground shrine before the cavern collapses. As she walks into the night, she sees the lights of all the formerly trapped spirits floating up into the sky, free. After that day, her sixth sense ability seems to have vanished.*

Miku is taken in by [[Yuu Asou]], who was a co-worker and friend of her brother Mafuyu. Miku gets a black and white cat (apparently a 'gift' from her deceased parents) whom she names [[Ruri]]. Yuu eventually introduces Miku to his fiancée [[Rei Kurosawa]], a photographer, and Miku works as Rei's assistant. The three live together under the same roof for a while; Miku has [[Miku's Room|her own room]] where she keeps a photograph of herself and Mafuyu on her desk. While Yuu knows that Miku lost her brother, she has never spoken to Rei about it. Miku tries to put the events of those nights behind her, always wearing a smile on her face. But two years after Miku moves in, Yuu is killed in a car accident. After Yuu's death, Rei closes herself off from the outside world so Miku, understanding what it's like to lose someone, takes over the cooking, chores, and errands.

A month or two after Yuu's death, Miku and Rei go on an assignment to take photographs of a supposedly [[Kuze Shrine|haunted mansion]]. The trip seems uneventful, until Rei begins having trouble sleeping, and Miku begins to have new nightmares about Himuro Mansion.

Miku begins by collecting information on a woman in a photograph Rei presents to her, [[Yoshino Takigawa]], who was the sole survivor of an airplane crash. As she begins to research and find clues for Rei on the [[Manor of Sleep]], her dreams become more and more vivid. Her powers, which were considered 'lost' at the end of [[Fatal Frame]], have now returned without explanation. She dreams of Himuro Mansion, and a [[Kizuna Himuro|Rope Shrine Maiden]]. She dreams about a girl called [[Amane Kuze|Amane]], who is also looking for her [[Kaname Ototsuki|brother]]. Amane tells Miku her brother is here waiting for her, and begins to lead Miku deeper into the manor.

Soon, Miku begins showing symptoms of the [[Tattooed Curse]]. During her waking hours she is tired and distant. Rei also catches her singing a [[lullaby]]. At night she talks in her sleep, calling out for Mafuyu and her mother, and sobbing about "the ropes." When the [[Snake & Holly Tattoo|tattoo]] has covered nearly all of Miku's body, she tells Rei that she understands the tattoo to be her punishment for living when Mafuyu died. Rei attempts to console her and assures her that they will get through the ordeal. Before Rei goes to bed, Miku tells her that the car accident wasn't her fault and trails off into an apology. She then asks to be left alone.

Soon after, Miku succumbs to the curse and chases after what appears to be Mafuyu. (In-game there is also the option not to go after Mafuyu, so Miku is instead claimed by [[Reika Kuze|Reika]]). Rei desperately tries to stop her, but can only watch as Miku fades and disappears. When Rei wakes from her dream, she finds Miku fast asleep with [[Engraver|Engravers]] hovering around her. Miku is alive, but in a deep coma.

Rei is able to find a way to stop the curse, and is able to free Miku as well as herself. In the final scene after the credits, Miku and Rei are seen sitting together on a beach watching the sunset. Miku says she finally understands why she and Rei were allowed to survive. The two resolve to live on even with their pain, knowing that a part of the people they love will live on with them.

==Fatal Frame V==

As the offspring of the living and the dead, Miu is a [[Shadowborn]]. Bearing such a child weakened Miku and shortened her life considerably. In the [[Mikomori Region|area]] near [[Mount Hikami]], she learned of the tradition of [[Ghost Marriage]]. When she felt the end approaching, she left Miu, then only three years old, and travelled up the mountain to the [[House of Joining]]. There, she entered into a [[Ghost Marriage]], with Mafuyu as her partner, hoping that by doing so she could be with him again, and ease his suffering as he helped to keep the [[Hell Gate]] closed. In accordance with the rituals of Mount Hikami, Miku was placed in a [[Reliquary|casket]] and became a [[Pillar]]. As an [[Immortal Flower]], she did not age, and so she still looks the same fifteen years later when Miu finds her.

After a weak protest, Miku agrees to go home with Miu, and the two stay in [[Kurosawa's Antiques]] for a short time. In a dream, Miu sees that Miku is returning to the mountain, and follows her to the [[Lake of the Departed]]. Together they wade out into the water and witness the [[Dark Sun|eternal sunset]] visible only on the border of death, while Miku explains about her longing to be with Mafuyu. Miu finally understands Miku's reasons for leaving, but begs her to stay even so.

At this point, there are two possible outcomes. In one, Miku vanishes, leaving Miu alone. In the second, Miu wakes to find Miku still sleeping beside her, and they spend the remainder of Miku's life together.

In the second, she remained with Miu, but the consequences of giving birth to a Shadowborn were still with her, and she had only a short time left.

When 零～Zero～ was brought to the United States as [[Fatal Frame]] (and to Europe as Project Zero), Miku's overall design and look was 'Westernized' to make her more appealing to gamers. This character design was also used in all Xbox versions of the game. Curiously enough, even with the changes, whenever Miku appears in other games outside of Fatal Frame, she is wearing her [[Default Miku Costume Japanese(FF)|original Japanese outfit]] - it is even an unlockable in [[Fatal Frame III]].

In Fatal Frame III, Miku's default costume was modelled on the outfit she wore in Fatal Frame, so it has a similar outline and sense of symmetry.
