Due to translation error between the US/Japanese versions of Fatal Frame III, it is unknown whether Shizu Amakura was spirited away, or is sick in the hospital as previously reported.

Fatal Frame II

Mio Amakura

The main heroine of Fatal Frame II, and younger twin sister to Mayu. She and her sister visit the Minakami area after hearing that an impending dam will flood the area they used to play in as children. Once in the forest, Mio is reminded of her childhood memories and guilt about the accident Mayu was involved in in the area years before. Panicking, Mio looks around, spotting Mayu wandering off into the forest after a crimson butterfly. Following her sister into the village, the two eventually become separated. Mio begins her quest to find her sister and find a way out of the village, eventually finding the path to the Hellish Abyss where the Crimson Ceremony takes place. She fights the Kusabi, the former folklorist Seijiro Makabe, and exorcises him. She finds herself in the Abyss, where Mayu is waiting for her. The two successfully complete the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, and Mio becomes a Remaining.

Mio makes a reappearance in Fatal Frame III, as part of her uncle Kei's dreams, in the Minakami Village section of the Manor of Sleep. She becomes trapped in the dream after regretting taking her sister's life, and receives the Tattooed Curse as a result. Mio soon has to be hospitalized, only waking up for around three hours at a time. Kei leaves her at the hospital and heads for Rei Kurosawa's home, in hopes that together they can find a solution to the curse.

Mayu Amakura

The older twin sister of Mio and daughter of Shizu. After becoming trapped in the Lost Village with her sister, she becomes possessed by the spirit of the last Twin Shrine Maiden, Sae Kurosawa. Sae begins to take control of Mayu, who has a strong sixth sense. As the night wears on, the twins are separated again and again. Mayu becomes more strongly influenced by Sae, speaking in her voice and assuming her form to beg Mio, whom she calls Yae, not to leave her. When the ceremony begins the twins try to escape through the Kureha Shrine, but Mayu is caught by a group of villagers and returned to the Kurosawa House. Mio finds Mayu waiting for her at the edge of the Hellish Abyss and, influence by the spirits of Sae and Yae, strangles her to death. Mayu's body is thrown into the Abyss by Mourners, and a single Crimson Butterfly emerges and whispers, "Thank you."

Mayu also makes a small appearance in Fatal Frame III, standing over Mio and surrounded by Crimson Butterflies in a photo taken by Kei.

Shizu Amakura

The mother of Mio and Mayu, and wife of Misao. Her only known family is her younger brother, Kei Amakura. She met and eventually married Misao Asou, who took Shizu's surname of Amakura. Shizu eventually gave birth to twin daughters. For a while, Shizu lived with her husband and children in the Minakami area. One day, Misao didn't return from the forest, and Shizu eventually realized that he had been spirited away. She told her daughters that their father had died, and did not speak of the matter further. Furthermore, while playing in the forest, Mayu severely injured her leg and was crippled for life. Shizu decided to move away from the area. Several years later, Shizu became ill and had to be hospitalized, leaving her daughters in the care of Kei. Her fate is unknown; she is presumably still in the hospital.

Misao Amakura/Asou

The father of Mio and Mayu. Hardly anything is known about him. He is a direct descendant of Dr. Kunihiko Asou, and is therefore related in some way to Yuu and Misaki Asou, but the exact relationships are unknown. When Misao married Shizu Amakura, he took her last name. The reason for this is unknown, but there is fan speculation it was to escape the last name of Asou, since Asou Family members seem to suffer untimely deaths in the Fatal Frame Series. When Mio and Mayu were very young, Misao became lost in the nearby woods of the Minakami area, having 'found' the Lost Village. His ultimate fate is unknown; however, his wife Shizu told her daughters that their father had died. It is more likely that Shizu knew the fate of her husband, since she soon after moved out of the area.

Fatal Frame III

Kei Amakura

In Fatal Frame III, Shizu Amakura's younger brother, Kei Amakura, is introduced. Kei was left with looking after the responsibility of taking care of Mio after Mayu disappeared. A friend of both Mafuyu Hinasaki and Yuu Asou, Kei is searching for answers regarding the mysterious disappearances and illnesses plaguing those he cares for.
