Amane Kuze is one of the four Handmaidens who appear in Fatal Frame III. Most of the time she acts as a guide, and leaves clues for the player to follow. Like all of the other Handmaidens, Amane wears ritual attire of white and red; however, she isn't armed with a stake or mallet like they are.
Past
Amane was born to Kyouka Kuze at the Kuze manor. Her father was an unknown Outsider, one of the men who were admitted to the manor for the purpose of producing heirs once every few years. The head of the family at the time, Yashuu Kuze, was her grandmother. At some point, Kyouka informed Amane that she had an older half-brother named Kaname, who had been smuggled out to a nearby village as a young child, along with the same earrings his mother had been given by Kaname's father.[1]
Some time later, when Amane was under the age of nine, a woman named Reika Yukishiro arrived at the Kuze Shrine to volunteer as the new priestess. Amane was appointed as a Handmaiden, the only one of the four who was a Kuze by blood, and was charged with caring for the new priestess. She noticed that the earring Reika wore, which she said she had been given by a friend, resembled the one her mother owned, and suspected that Reika's friend was her half-brother Kaname. Reika would tell Amane stories about the outside world, which she found eased her pain, and often spoke of Kaname.[1]
The Unleashing

Once Reika's entire body had been covered in tattoos, she was to be impaled in the Chamber of Thorns. Having heard her calling to him in his dreams for months and feeling like he had to see her,[2][3] Kaname hurried back to the manor and sneaked inside the shrine, hidden amongst the other worshippers. Amane helped him get into the shrine to see Reika one last time, despite it being against the code for men to enter, and knowing that her grandmother would be angry.[4]
Kaname made it to the Chamber of Thorns where Reika now slept and managed to see her, but was caught and killed in front of her by Yashuu, causing the Unleashing. Amane continued to await his return, unaware of what had happened.[5] She was ultimately impaled at the bottom of the Abyss by her fellow Handmaidens, as punishment for her transgression.[6]
Fatal Frame III
When Miku Hinasaki becomes afflicted by the Tattooed Curse and begins dreaming of the manor, Amane appears to her as a benevolent spirit, guiding her around and urging her to help her "big brother" and Reika. Amane appeals to Miku specifically because she, too, has lost her brother. Because of the sympathetic bond between them, Miku initially dreams of singing the Handmaiden's Song, and Amane later appears in Rei's house, standing beside Miku and begging for help.
Misc. Info
- While Amane is the little sister of Kaname Ototsuki, they have different fathers. She does call Akito Kashiwagi 'father' in one of her diaries, but in official correlation charts her father is listed as an unnamed man, who was an Outsider.
- A side story focusing on Amane and the other Handmaidens is included in the Zero Shisei no Koe Comic Anthology. In it, Amane appears to have grown up outside the shrine, in the same village as Hisame. At the beginning of the story, she has recently been chosen as a Handmaiden, and begins her training at the shrine soon after.
- Amane appears as a hostile ghost in Mission Mode.
- Amane can be distinguished from the other Handmaidens by her braided pigtails.
