The Echo Stone Earrings were a set of earrings made from echo stone that supposedly allowed the wearer to hear the voice of the person holding the other earring.[1] They were given to Kyouka Kuze by her lover Akito Kashiwagi after he left the mansion; he seems to have given her two pairs. Kyouka later gave three earrings to their son, Kaname Ototsuki, hoping that Akito would one day recognize his son by the earring and adopt him.[2] When the old manor was sealed in the Unleashing, Kyouka accidentally forgot the earring and left it in her old room.[3]
Kaname gave one of the earrings to Reika Kuze,[4] and claimed to be able to hear her voice through it after they were separated. Of the pair he had left, he wore one during his return to the Kuze Shrine and accidentally left one with Dr. Kunihiko Asou.[1] Yashuu Kuze recognised Kaname as her own grandson by the earring he wore.[5]
Dr. Asou used the Echo Stone Earring in the development of the Spirit Stone Radio and it was passed down in the Asou Family, eventually falling into the hands of Yuu Asou. Yuu stored it in the attic of his house, where it was found by his fiancée Rei Kurosawa after his death.
Holding an Echo Stone Earring is key to Kei's survival in the alternate ending, and the guidebook notes that without the earring she finds, Rei might have become trapped in the dream world too.[6]
Misc. Info
- The word 響く (to echo or to be heard from afar) has an alternate meaning of 'to come (home); to remain (with someone)', so the name of the earrings may also be intended to evoke a sense of longing to be with a person one is separated from.
