Flamekeepers
|
Flamekeepers (Japanese: hitsugimori) are a group of ghosts who appear in Fatal Frame V. They were priests who watched over the Forbidden Flame, a sacred fire with a special significance in Mount Hikami's rituals. The flames drive away black water, but are too strong for the human eye to bear, so the Flamekeepers blind themselves and cover their eyes with veils. They also constructed Reliquaries in a workshop at the Hall of Fire, painting them with ink made from black water. The Forbidden Flame was used to light the lanterns at the Shrine of the Ephemeral, to ensure the purity of the water as it flowed down the mountain.
They Flamekeepers were slaughtered together at the Hall of Fire by Kyozo Kururugi during his murderous rampage.

Misc. Info
- The first part of their title, "hitsugi", sounds the same as the word for a casket in Japanese, though it is written instead with the characters for "fire" and "inherit". This is probably the origin of the name Casket Marsh, a pool of water that appeared on the site of the Hall of Fire after the priests were massacred.
