Forbidden Valley
|
The Forbidden Valley (Japanese name: Imidani) is an old graveyard near the top of Mount Hikami, created in a basin. There are no words carved on the gravestones. The area was left untended for a long time, but the area was restored as it was the only way to reach the Twilit Peak and Lake of the Departed at the mountain's summit. However, a landslide occurred, flooding the graveyard with water. Investigations were performed on the area, but no bones were discovered, leading people to assume that it was created to mourn the souls of those who had no bodies to leave behind.
Rumours circulate that, since the graveyard has been around since the mountain's religion was still being practiced, it contains killed shrine maidens or human sacrifices. In reality, it was used as a place of reverence for the soulless bodies of men who entered into Ghost Marriages as part of the mountain's rituals, being put into black boxes with a shrine maiden. If the Ghost Marriage failed, however, the man's soul would be enshrined at the muenzuka - a large, triangular pile of gravestones with no one to tend them - on the easternmost side of the area.
