Kanon Ohtori is a character in Fatal Frame: Shadow Priestess. She was Sara Washizuki's childhood friend, and her father, a photographer, helped found the photography club at Karasawa Elementary along with Sara's mother.

Background

Kanon's parents were divorced; she and her father moved back to Karasawa Village, while her mother and elder brother Tousei lived in Tokyo. When Kanon transferred to Karasawa Elementary, she was not put off by the rumours that Sara could communicate with spirits and that talking to her would bring bad luck. She quickly persuaded Sara to be her friend, and even remarked that she would like to be able to talk to ghosts and make friends with them as well.

While she and Sara were playing in some woods protected by the Washizuki family, a ghostly voice called Kanon towards a cave mouth. Sara warned her not to enter, but Kanon returned later and was beckoned inside by a spirit, which possessed her. She was trapped in the caves for a day, until Sara came looking for her. Sara had heard legends of a hidden path through the caves to Mount Kegare, sealed long ago by the Washizuki family, and hoped that it would offer an escape route, but the passage led to a dead end marked by a small shrine.

At that moment, the spirit possessing Kanon attacked Sara. In the struggle, Sara's magatama charm fell out of the pouch she carried, and a ghostly woman appeared, ordering the spirits to leave Kanon. When Kanon woke, she saw Sara fighting for her life against a group of spirits. She used another magatama that was hidden inside the shrine at the dead end to drive them away.

As Sara collapsed, unconscious, water began to pour into the cave and the walls started to collapse. The female ghost appeared again to lead Kanon to safety, and she and Sara returned home.

Disappearance

One night, Kanon convinced Sara to go with her to the school after dark for a swim in the pool. Sara was reluctant, but Kanon jumped in without hesitation and never surfaced. The pool was searched, but no trace of Kanon was ever found; she was assumed dead, and soon afterwards the school was closed. Sara always wondered whether Kanon's disappearance was in some way connected to what happened in the cave.

Tousei continued to search for his sister and hunt for clues about what happened to her. Eventually he returned to Karasawa Elementary and took a photo of the pool, in which Kanon's face was visible under the water. Armed with this photo, he approached Sara at her university and encouraged her to go back to the school and find out why Kanon disappeared.

Shadow Priestess

As Tousei and Sara investigate Karasawa Elementary, along with Sara's architecture class and a group of urban explorers calling themselves Moebius, Kanon appears from time to time to help guide them through the necromancer's puzzles. Usually she appears as a pair of hands emerging from water, conveying hints through signs and gestures, but in Chapter 39, she briefly possesses Narumi Amanuma's unconscious body and communicates with Sara more directly. Sara is finally able to express her regret over what happened, and Kanon thanks Sara for remembering her. She explains that ever since she jumped into the swimming pool she has been trapped, floating in the water that flows between the worlds. She begins to warn her about the necromancer, but before she can, Narumi begins choking and wakes up.
