A Curse Affecting Only Girls

Kasumi is a student in her final year at Saint Loudun's Academy for Girls. Before her induction into the school six years ago, Kasumi came to the bank of the nearby river, where she witnessed a strange scene: a beautiful girl floating in the water. Later, she saw Aya, who looked exactly like the girl in the river, and fell in love with her. Ever since, she has wished to "curse" Aya with the school's traditional love-charm.

Because of Kasumi's quiet presence, she is the only person who manages to talk to Michi, who habitually avoids other people. Michi likes to take photographs, and Kasumi has been begging her to take a picture of Aya, but Michi has always refused.

She is desperate to see Aya perform the solo Ophelia's Song at their graduation ceremony, but doesn't dare to nominate her out loud in case it makes her feelings too obvious. Fortunately, Risa speaks up instead. Since Aya has been absent for two weeks and is presumed to be in trouble, Kasumi and Ritsuko go to the Headmistress to ask whether it will be possible for her to perform. During the meeting, Kasumi senses the white figure of a girl in front of the painting of Ophelia that hangs behind the Headmistress's desk.

Eventually, Kasumi manages to buy a photo of Aya from Itsuki. While she's looking at it, the ghostly white figure appears and tells her that Aya is possessed, and in order to save her, Kasumi must curse her by kissing her photo a thousandth of a second before midnight, and hang it side by side with a picture of herself on the wall behind the confessional. Since the ghost girl looks so much like Aya, Kasumi gladly follows her instructions.

The next day, in study hall, she sees the ghost girl out of the window. She goes out to look for her. Michi reluctantly goes as well, and without warning, Kasumi vanishes, leaving behind only her shoes. A boy taking photographs by the river sees Kasumi's body floating upstream, against the current. Later her body is discovered, hacked to pieces.

Fatal Frame: The Movie

At the beginning of the movie, Kasumi is worried about Aya, who has locked herself in her room and refuses to come out. Kasumi has loved Aya from afar for some time, and longs to see her again, counting the days of her absence and asking her best friend, Michi, to try and take a picture of Aya for her to look at. She even goes to see the Headmistress to express her concerns. Kasumi's worries weigh on her to the extent that she starts to become ill.

In this state of mind, she obtains a photo which she believes to be of Aya. At the school, a tradition states that kissing someone's photo at the instant before midnight will curse them to fall in love with you, so Kasumi does this, hoping it will make Aya come out and see her. However, Aya remains secluded in her room.

One morning, Michi notices that Kasumi is unwell, and the two skip their gardening class to go for a walk in the forest. Kasumi feels weak and sits down to rest on a pile of wood, while Michi wanders among the trees, wondering aloud about the future. While Michi is looking away, Kasumi vanishes, and no one can find her.

Like the other victims of the curse, she is drawn to a water reserve deep in the forest, to meet the girl from the photo, but before she can get there, Mayumi Asou knocks her out and drowns her in the lake. Several days later, her body washes up, along with those of several other girls who kissed the photo and were spirited away. Michi is deeply affected by Kasumi's death, feeling in some way responsible for not saving her.
