Minakami Village is the setting for Fatal Frame II and Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly.
Years ago during the Meiji Period, the entire village mysteriously vanished on the night of a ceremony. Only one girl escaped the village before it disappeared. The spot where the village once stood is covered in a thick fog, and people who get lost within the forest are said to have been spirited away. Since the construction of Minakami Dam and the subsequent flooding of the entire forest, it is unknown if the village still exists or if it can still be reached by ordinary means.
