The Seamstress, usually referred to only as the old woman, is a mysterious, grey-haired woman who appears in Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir. She appears to people who become involved with the diary, chanting cryptic words which seem to have some connection to its hidden secrets. No one who hears her chanting is able to leave the diary.
Past
The old woman was the only person allowed to have contact with Maya in the Old House, in order to take care of her. Embodying her ceremonial role, the old woman would no longer have a name, but would be referred only to as "Kami-uba" (holy woman). She took care that Maya, the future Vessel, should not be allowed to form any bonds through which a spirit could escape.[1] However, she left Maya a diary, not suspecting that Maya, in her loneliness, would create a companion to confide in.
As Maya approached the age of fifteen (eighteen in the English translation), the village near the Old House was suffering from a mysterious plague, and even the doctor refused to visit.[2] The villagers and the old woman decided they had no choice but to perform the Tokoyomi Ritual, summoning a spirit into the Vessel in hopes that it would save them. Before the ritual, Maya attempted to run away, but the villagers soon found her hiding in a storeroom inside the Old House.
The ritual was performed then and there. The old woman sewed Maya's eyes and mouth shut, chanting: "Receive the spirit in peace, grow in the land and people... Never escape!"[3]
Once it had been confirmed that the god had descended to fill the Vessel, it was the old woman's duty to sever the final bond (between herself and the shrine maiden),[1] presumably by ending her own life. Before she had the chance, the Darkness broke free from the imperfect Vessel and swallowed up the house and everyone in it.[4] The old woman became trapped in the version of the house that existed in the Purple Diary, where the Woman in Black imprisoned people to keep her company in her search for the real Maya.
Although the old woman has been trapped in the diary the longest, she does not try to escape until the events of Spirit Camera, and so her face has not yet been mutilated when the player first encounters her.
Misc. Info
- She has clematis vines sticking out from her body.
- One of her attacks involves attempting to stab the player's eyes from behind with a pair of large needles. It is impossible to turn and face her during this attack; the Shutter Chance only occurs when the player is facing her hands.
- In game files such as her fight music and character models, the Seamstress is labelled Kiku. It is not known if this is the old woman's real name.
