Shadow Festival
|
The Shadow Festival is an event shown in Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly. It is a summer festival in which crowds gather to watch as hundreds of paper lanterns are released into the night sky.
History
The Shadow Festival derives from the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual of Minakami Village, although with much of the associated lore stripped away. Certain religious traditions from Minakami Village were dispersed through the region nearby, and the Shadow Festival is an example of this. The release of the lanterns recalls the swarm of crimson butterflies that emerge from the Abyss following a successful ritual, and the festival takes place at a shrine which takes its name from Minakami's Kureha Shrine.[1]

Mio and Mayu Amakura attended the Shadow Festival several times when they were growing up.[2] On one occasion, before Mayu's accident, she and Mio became separated in the crowd, and this coalesced Mayu's fear that they would eventually grow apart.[3] However, in the Shadow Festival Ending, the twins return to this festival as a vision of a time when there was nothing separating them, and they shared the same thoughts.[4]
Itsuki, Mutsuki and Chitose Tachibana can also be seen as Vanishing ghosts in Chapter VII, watching a projector reel of the Shadow Festival. This footage was recorded by Seijiro Makabe at the Kureha Shrine in another village.[5]
Misc. Info
- Kagematsuri is a real-world term, which refers to a more modest festival held on years when the main, non-annual festival does not take place.[6]
- Originally, the Shadow Festival took place at the same time as the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. However, after the disappearance of Minakami Village, it seems to have become more frequent, since Mio and Mayu were able to attend more than once.
- The ritual to create the Kusabi is also referred to as the Shadow Ritual in Deep Crimson Butterfly.
