The term 'Spirited Aways' or 'Spirited Away' is used within the Fatal Frame Series to describe a specific group of missing people. These people have completely disappeared without cause or reason, but the most important aspect of their disappearance is that there is suspicion of the paranormal being involved.

When a person has been said to be spirited away, it means that they have been taken by spirits to another place. The bodies of the victims are usually never found. Spirited Aways don't necessarily disappear in similar circumstances or even similar locations.

People can be spirited away (i.e. taken to another place by paranormal influences) and survive (such in the cases of Miku Hinasaki, Mio Amakura and Rei Kurosawa), but they aren't classified as Spirited Aways, because they survived and came back.

This specific term was not used until the third game in the Fatal Frame Series, but all the games thus far have used the theme of one being taken by ghosts and spirits. Different names may be applied to the same phenomenon in specific areas or circumstances: for example, the Lost Patients in Fatal Frame III, or residents of Rogetsu Isle who were thought to have been "taken to the moon".[1]

Misc Info

  • The concept of being 'spirited away' recurs often in Japanese folklore. The term is called 'kamikakushi' (神隠し) and the concept was the person was taken away by a spirit or displeased god. (Tengu stories are often linked to spirited away tales). Another term often used is 'Onikakushi' (鬼隠し) refers to a person 'spirited away' by a demon. Kamikakushi is used within the Fatal Frame Series.
  • The urban legend of Sugisawa Village also deals with a lost village and the concept of people being spirited away.
  • In Fatal Frame IV, the Japanese term kamikakushi was used to refer to the kidnapped girls, even though their kidnapper was human, and they were not captured or lured by spirits.
