Twin Deities Statues
Twin Deity Statues (Twin Guardian Statues in Deep Crimson Butterfly) appear in Fatal Frame II, scattered throughout Minakami Village. A new one was erected whenever a set of twins performed the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual successfully. One of the twins depicted on the statue is always missing a head,[1] a reference to the younger twin that is strangled during the ritual. After the Repentance, all that remained of the village was a statue in the middle of the forest. Anyone who passed it became trapped within the village.[2] [3] In the game's opening cutscene, the moment Mio passes the Twin Deity Statue hidden at the foot of a tree is the moment she enters the village's endless night.
The folklorist Seijiro Makabe writes about the statues in his notes about village customs. Later, Masumi Makimura, a land surveyor trapped in the village, takes note of them as he looks for a way to escape.
The keys that open the door to Whisper Bridge and Kurosawa House are hidden inside two Twin Deities statues.
