The Shadow Priestess is a figure mentioned in the manga of the same name. The title is passed down through the female line of Sara Washizuki's family, whose house is also a shrine, and is connected to Mount Kegare. Sara tells Beniko that she had to perform certain priestess duties as a child.

Tousei Ryuuzaki appears to have an extensive knowledge of Sara's history, both family and personal, and is interested in the Shadow Priestess for unknown reasons.

Duties and Rituals
Long ago, the priestesses of the family performed a ritual to seal a hidden underground path leading down from Mount Kegare. The ritual centred around two priestesses, one of whom would sacrifice herself to watch over the caves forever, and one of whom would spend the rest of her life praying. These priestesses appear to be represented by two magatama charms. As a child, Sara is shown carrying a magatama in a pouch around her neck, and another is hidden deep in the caves, where a small shrine blocks the way.

The female members of the family continue to watch over the region and the seals on Mount Kegare. A former Shadow Priestess, Sara's great-great grandmother, put her thoughts and feelings into a camera, which has the ability to exorcise ghosts, and the Shadow Priestess role combines use of the camera with traditional exorcism techniques to deal effectively with ghosts.

In modern times the Karasawa Shrine also serves as an inn. Tourists who wish to visit Mount Kegare receive paper dolls from the shrine to protect them on the mountain.
