==Fatal Frame: The Movie==
In the movie, as in the book, the curse is cast by kissing the photo of the person you like at precisely midnight. Here, it originates in a local tradition where girls who fell in love would enter into a suicide pact, drowning themselves in a nearby lake and having their photos enshrined at [[Kusanagi Photo Studio]], in the hope that they would be together forever. The [[Headmistress]] and her [[Mio Takaishi|lover]] were the last people to participate in this custom, and because the Headmistress didn't die, she was haunted for the rest of her life by the ghost of the dead girl who couldn't move on.

Later, the curse is perpetuated and spread by [[Maya Tsukimori]]. Longing to be reunited with her twin sister, [[Aya Tsukimori|Aya]], Maya co-opted the accumulated feelings of all the girls who drowned in the water where her body remained. She used them to summon girls to her, hoping that this would eventually allow her to meet Aya.
