New page

The curse that only affects girls is an affliction, of sorts, tied to a small-scale ritual practised by students at Saint Loudun's Academy for Girls (or Seijitsu Academy in the movie). In such a secluded same-sex environment, girls at the school fall in love with each other, and have formed a tradition of "cursing" the person they hope will return their feelings.

A Curse Affecting Only Girls
The girls who are cursed report seeing visions of the one who cursed them, and sometimes fever and dizziness. Everyone agrees that the curse is performed by kissing the person's photo, but beyond that nobody can agree on the exact method. Mary knows more about it than anybody, and the ghost of a girl who looks like Aya begins appearing around the school, instructing girls on how to perform the curse properly.

The curse has its roots in the practice of yuukon, or posthumous marriage, which was performed at a shrine near Saint Loudun's. During Russo-Japanese War, pictures of soldiers who died in battle were enshrined with those of their wives and girlfriends so that they would have somebody to be with them in the afterlife. Mio Takaishi and her lover decided that, since their love was taboo and they could never be together in life, this was their best hope. They offered up an album with their photos in it, intending to commit suicide together. Mio died, but her lover survived, and was cursed for her betrayal.

Over time, the practice of placing photos side by side shifted into a more innocent love-charm, and its origins were all but forgotten. However, the album remained the focal point of Mio's potent curse. When girls at the school began using a photograph of a dead girl in their curses, mistaking her for Aya, the curse was awakened, and the girl from the photo began spiriting them away. Takashi Saginomiya facilitated the process by ensuring that photographs hung up in the confessional were placed in the album.

Fatal Frame: The Movie
In the movie, as in the book, the curse is cast by kissing the photo of the person you like at precisely midnight. Here, it originates in a local tradition where girls who fell in love would enter into a suicide pact, drowning themselves in a nearby lake and having their photos enshrined at Kusanagi Photo Studio, in the hope that they would be together forever. The Headmistress and her lover were the last people to participate in this custom, and because the Headmistress didn't die, she was haunted for the rest of her life by the ghost of the dead girl who couldn't move on.

Later, the curse is perpetuated and spread by Maya Tsukimori. Longing to be reunited with her twin sister, Aya, Maya co-opted the accumulated feelings of all the girls who drowned in the water where her body remained. She used them to summon girls to her, hoping that this would eventually allow her to meet Aya.
