It is a curious saying. It must mean that the spring is both of this world and yet not of this world.

The [[Black Water]] flows from the Shadowspring. Within it lies the underworld itself.

For centuries the [[Maidens of Black Water|shrine maidens]] have protected the Shadowspring, believing it to be a bridge between worlds.

Tales abound of such bridges.

Are there people all over the country protecting these bridges as Mt. Hikami does, by drowning shrine maidens?

Perhaps [[Ose Kurosawa]], the last [[Immortal Flower]], was one such sacrifice.
