A spot by the old path to the shrines on Mt. Hikami. The path passes by a few waterfalls, and the pilgrims used to clean themselves in their crystal clear water before proceeding to the shrines.

The pool below the Maiden Fall, used by shrine maidens, was particularly beautiful. For a brief time the Pool of Purification was a tourist attraction, and shrine maidens performed ritual ablutions for show, but it's been some time since tourists last came to Mt. Hikami.

According to a legend, the true shrine maidens of Mt. Hikami had all been murdered, which might be the reason the faith abruptly died out. Their bodies are said to have washed up into the pool. Occultists like to refer to it as the "Maiden Pool."

禊ヶ淵（みそぎがふち）

日上山の旧参道沿いにある、山の名所。

水が豊富な日上山の参道には幾つかの
滝があり、山に入る人々はその水で身を
清める慣わしがあった。


巫滝（かんなぎだき）が流れ込む滝壺と
美しい淵がある「禊ヶ淵」は、巫女が身を
清める特別な場所だったと言われている。

その後、巫女が禊を行う行事が再現される
といった観光スポットとなっていたが、今では
訪れる者もいない。


その昔、日上山の巫女たちが全て殺され、
多数の死体がこの淵に流れついたという
言い伝えがあり、日上山信仰はそれが
原因で潰えたとも言われている。

現在も、巫女の死体を見たという噂が
絶えず、オカルト系の雑誌などでは
「巫女ヶ淵」と呼ばれている。
