The original intention behind Postmortem Photography was to give the mourning relatives something to remember their loved ones by. The bodies were dressed in the finest clothes, and their faces made to look as if they were alive.

At a time when photographs were a luxury very few could afford, Postmortem Photographs offered a chance to capture an image of their beloved. Dr. Kunihiko Aso, with his Camera Obscura, had been invited all over Japan to take such pictures. Most of them are on Mt. Hikami.

Postmortem Photographs were especially treasured by those living on and around Mt. Hikami. They believed that a camera captures the soul of the photographed person, preserving it unchanged for eternity.

弔写真（とむらいしゃしん）

死者を弔う為に撮られた写真。

遺族は死者を弔うため、遺体を生きている
ように着飾らせ、化粧を施してその姿を
写真に収めた。


まだ写真が高価だった頃、庶民にとって
写真を撮影できる機会は、死後が最も
多かったという。

射影機の試作品を作っていた
麻生博士により撮影され、日本の各地に
残されているが、特に日上山の周辺に
多く残されている。


西洋の死後写真
（Post-morterm photography）
にも似ているが、日上山周辺では
弔写真は別の意味合いを持っていた。

写真機という「箱」に魂を写し取ることで、
永久に変わらない姿を保つ「箱入り様」
になることは、特別に喜ばしいことであった
という。
