In the Mt. Hikami faith, souls are born from the water, so to return to it is to die.

Dying in the waters of the mountain was seen as the right way to leave this world, and it was this act that was known as "Returning to Water."

Only those who were seeking this death would be permitted onto Mt. Hikami.

While it is a common belief that souls of suicides become cursed, "Returning to Water" did not carry this stigma and was thought to enable a peaceful and restful death.

水帰り（みがえり）

日上山信仰で、山で死ぬことを言う。

昔、日上山信仰では人々は「水より
生まれ、水に帰る」と信じられていた。

そのため、山の水に濡れて死ぬことは
魂を水に戻す「正しい死」として、特別
に「水帰り」と呼んだ。


日上山には、自ら死を選んだ者だけが
入山を許され、山中で自ら命を絶つ。

本来、自殺者は亡者となると言われ、
自殺することは忌み嫌われているが、
日上山の水に触れて死ぬことによって
「水帰り」することができ、正しく死ぬこと
ができる、とされていた。
