An enormous lava cave which possibly stretches out to cover the whole area of Mt. Hikami. Several entrances have been discovered.
Much of the cavern is flooded, so only parts are accessible without specialist equipment.
In the past, water was deified on Mt. Hikami and the worshippers thought of the mountain as a divine being, with the cavern serving as its womb. The cavern was a most sacred place, and access to it was restricted. The entrances were cordoned off with sacred ropes.
When the mountain was being developed for tourism, a newly made tunnel broke through one of the cavern walls. Water rushed into the tunnel, drowning dozens of workers. Many thought the disaster was brought on by a curse incurred by disturbing such a spiritual place.

胎内洞窟（たいないどうくつ）
日上山全域に広がるといわれている
溶岩洞窟。
山中に多数の入り口が確認されており、
その全てが内部で繋がっているといわれ
ている。
洞内には大量の水が流れており、通り
抜けることができる場所は一部しかない。
かつて、日上山では水を御神体として
祭っていたとされていることから、山を体と
見立て、体内に神を宿すという意味で、
胎内洞窟と呼ばれるようになった、と伝え
られている。
そのため、洞内は神聖な場所であり、
入り口には注連縄などが施され、立ち
入りは制限されていた。
観光化の時に行われたトンネル工事が
洞窟の一部に繋がってしまい、トンネル
内に大量の水が流れ込み、多くの死者
が出るという事故があり、当時は「祟り」
と騒がれた、と記録されている。
