Old tales from Mt. Hikami speak of Black Water, the waters of death which poured out from the Netherworld. It was the dark counterpart to the Pure Water.
Shrine maidens performed rituals to prevent it from overflowing into our world.

夜泉（よみ）
古い言い伝えなどに出てくる黒い水。
御澄に対して使われる言葉で、夜泉は
死、隠世そのものとして畏れられていた。
日上山では、この「夜泉」が溢れ出す
ことを畏れ、巫女たちが夜泉を封じる
儀式を行っていたと考えられている。
