The reliquaries were ornate wooden boxes used on Mt. Hikami for ritual sacrifices. Shrine maidens would be shut in the reliquaries, which would then be placed into the waters.
The ritual was believed to preserve the beauty of the Pure Water and prevent the Black Water from tainting it.

日上山の各所で見られる、木彫りの
装飾が施された黒い箱。
人柱となる者が匪に入り、
日上山の水がある場所に沈められる
ことで、御澄と呼ばれる水の美しさを
守るとされていた。
