This term refers to the shrine maidens drowned in the Shadowspring as sacrifices. The maidens were shut in boxes filled with Black Water. The water brought them close to death and gradually eroded their bodies. But if their resolve was strong they would retain their physical form.
While in the caskets, being suspended between life and death, the shrine maidens would not age. Their beauty being immune to the effects of time inspired people to call them Immortal Flowers.
