The Spirit Stone Radio was a modified crystal radio set that used crystals as part of its circuitry.
It picked up voices from the spirit world.
It was created by Dr. Asou, who also designed the Camera Obscura.
Dr. Asou, after giving Makabe the Camera Obscura prototype and the Spirit Stone Radio, travelled Japan seeking ways to complete his Camera Obscura, but died unexpectedly.
His death meant the principles behind how the devices captured the spirit would remain a mystery.

Using gemstones in its circuitry, this customised radio can detect the emanations left within stones, allowing the listener to tune into the voices of the spirits.
Like the Camera Obscura, the Spirit Stone Radio was developed by Dr. Asou.
After entrusting the radio and the prototype of the Camera Obscura to his friend Makabe, Dr. Asou travelled the length and breadth of Japan, doing research that would allow him to perfect his camera.
However, during his travels, Dr. Asou died mysteriously. The source of the Camera Obscura's powers is a mystery that he took to the grave.
Info - World: The Spirit Stone Radio
Like the Camera Obscura, the Spirit Stone Radio was created by Dr. Kunihiko Asou in order to detect signals from the spirit world. It is a simple radio receiver, modified with special crystals. After giving his radio and camera prototypes to Seijiro Makabe, Dr. Asou traveled all over Japan to perfect the Camera Obscura. He would die an unnatural death in the course of his research, taking with him forever the secrets of his devices.

霊石ラジオとは、回路の一部に鉱石を用いる
ことで検波する「鉱石ラジオ」を改良したも
のであり、霊界からの声をとらえることがで
きるという。
射影機と同じく、麻生博士によって作られた。
麻生博士は、真壁に試作機である射影機と
霊石ラジオを渡した後、射影機を完成させる
ため日本各地をたずねるが、研究中に変死。
射影機などの霊界をとらえる装置の原理は、
永遠の謎となった。
