An area of land on top of Mt. Hikami, covered in volcanic rock. It is a desolate landscape, devoid of vegetation due to volatile gases escaping from the rocks. Locals felt it looked like the underworld and, along with the Lake of the Departed, it was considered to be connected to the Netherworld.

Locals believe it is a sacred place. A sacrificial mound erected over a pile of caskets can be found here, as well as the Rear Shrine of Dolls, with dolls much older than the ones from the main Shrine of Dolls, located further down the mountain.

大禍境（おおまがきょう）

日上山山頂にある、火山岩で覆われた
一帯。岩場の間から火山性のガスが
噴出しているため、植物は殆どなく、荒涼
とした景色が広がっている。

その風景から地獄を連想させ、奥にある
彼岸湖とあわせて死後の世界、隠世に
近い場所であるとして、名所となっていた。


日上山信仰でも神聖な場所とされていた
と思われ、儀式などで使われたと考えられる
多くの「箱」が積み上げられた「匪塚」や、
山の中腹にある形代神社よりも古い人形を
祭った「形代奥社」がある。
