The Twilit Peak (Japanese name: Omagakyo) is an area at the top of Mt. Hikami, covered in volcanic rock and close to the Lake of the Departed. There is little plant life, and the scenery is desolate, reminiscent of Hell. It is well-known as the closest place to the Hidden World - the world of the dead - that lies further in. It also seems to have been worshipped as a sacred place by the mountain religion, and has a pile of boxes that seem to have been used in some kind of ritual, as well as the Rear Shrine of Dolls that houses even older dolls than the Shrine of Dolls itself.[1] Jizo and colourful pinwheels are placed to soothe the spirits of lost children, who climb the mountain seeking the sunset and are spirited away.
Misc. Info
- This area was inspired by Mount Osore, a well-known volcano in the far north of Japan. It is reputed in legend to be the entrance to Hell, and the nearby Lake Usori, with its white sandy shore and deceptively inviting (but highly acidic) blue-green water, is identified with the Sanzu River. Mount Osore's barren, rocky landscape, dotted with shrines and decorated with colourful pinwheels and other offerings to the dead, is very distinctive.
