The Spirit Stone Flashlight (霊石灯, れい せき とう) is a weapon used in Fatal Frame IV.

History

The Spirit Stone Flashlight was invented by Dr. Kunihiko Asou, most likely during his visit to Rogetsu Isle in the late Meiji period. It was designed to treat Moonlight Syndrome by collecting and then emitting moonlight, but it is also a powerful weapon against hostile spirits on the island.[1] Like the Camera Obscura Dr. Asou donated to the Rogetsu islanders, it is richly decorated; its mother-of-pearl inlays serve as a tribute to Rogetsu Isle, which is surrounded by sea.[1]

The Spirit Stone Flashlight ended up in the possession of Sayaka Minazuki, who gave it to Choshiro Kirishima to aid him in his search for her daughter, Ruka.

Capture Circle

The Flashlight's capture circle is unlike that of the Camera Obscura; it is a circular beam of light that resembles the moon. As the Flashlight gains charge, the circle expands and becomes more translucent.

Gameplay Tips

  • The flashlight is only usable when there is charge in the power meter (月霊力メーター, lunar spirit power meter). If the meter empties, the flashlight must be returned to "Field Mode" (lowered) to recharge before it can be used again.
  • Because it is such a powerful weapon, the player may find it useful to avoid upgrading the Spirit Stone Flashlight until after completing the spirit list. This will make it easier to collect entries for Blossoming ghosts, as otherwise the flashlight will defeat weaker spirits in a single shot on lower difficulties.
  • The "Camera lens" (called the "Develop Lens" in the fan translation) allows the Flashlight to take photos like a camera, but will not do any damage to hostile spirits. This has caused a lot of confusion, as many players have forgotten to remove the lens before battle, or equip it before taking a photo. If the flashlight is not behaving as expected, check on the Camera lens first.

Misc. Info

  • At the beginning of each new game, all functions must be manually re-equipped from the Flashlight menu.
