He used the new technology of the West to make various machines designed to prove the existence of the Other World.
The Camera Obscura was one of his inventions.
According to the book it could photograph supernatural objects existing on an alternate plane.
Was he somehow connected to the manor?

His research, known as "Mystical Science", attempted to use the new Western technology to explain old Japanese folk beliefs and traditions about the Other World.
After completing his Camera Obscura, capable of capturing images of the Other World, he made a projector using the same technology.
Using this he was able to play back supernatural images recorded on film that could not be seen on conventional equipment.

The first of his experiments to bear fruit was the Spirit Stone Radio.
This used crystal radio technology and was able to receive supernatural sounds that could normally not be detected.
The products of his research - the Camera Obscura, the Spirit Stone Radio and the Projector - were much sought after by enthusiasts after his death and were soon scattered all over the country.
