Funayūrei

Funayūrei are the spirits of people who have died at sea. It is said they would appear at people's boats, asking for a ladle. If given one, the spirit would then fill the ship with seawater until it sinks.

A famous example of Funayūrei can be found in the tale of Hoichi the Earless.
