Miko (巫女, miko) is a Japanese term that refers to a young female attendant at a Shinto shrine. Throughout Japanese history, the word "miko" has had meanings and connotations that include: shamaness, medium, prophet, consecrated virgin, priestess, nun, witch, and sorceress; however, the most common translation is shrine maiden. A miko's duties include performing in ceremonial dances and assisting priests in rituals such as weddings. Miko have a very distinctive costume.

The concept of a miko is used in the Fatal Frame series as inspiration for the various shrine maidens that have important religious roles in the beliefs of their locale.
