Organs
| ||||||||||||||||||||||
Organs (also known as Kanade or Instrumentalists in fan translations) are young shrine maidens in Fatal Frame IV who provided the musical backup to which the Vessel dances during the Rogetsu Kagura ritual. Each girl was responsible for a certain instrument: Flute, Strings, Bell, Drum, or Vocal.
The role of Organs originated with the Rite of Descent. After the first Day of Tranquility, when the Rite of Descent became taboo, the ceremony was transformed into the Kagura. Although the form remained the same, with five Organs providing musical accompaniment for the masked Vessel, various details were changed.
Differences
Selection
Organs for the Rite of Descent were chosen by the Guardian maidens, who looked out for girls of about seven years old with strong Moonsounds. The Organs who performed in the Kagura were about ten years old.[1] Because the Guardian tradition had died out, Moonsounds were not a factor in their selection. It is not clear by what criteria the Kagura Organs were selected, but Yo Haibara notes that the Organs for the Rite of Descent had to be chosen much more carefully so that they could become one with their masks.[2]
Clothing

Like the Vessel, the Organs of the traditional Rite of Descent wore attire very different from that of their tourist counterparts. The girls wore full dark-red colored kimonos, their hair was long, and they wore wreaths around their heads. The tourist Organ attire looked similar to that of present day miko: a white kimono worn with red hakama.
Developers originally planned to have the Organs joined by a red cord tied to their ankles, but this idea was dropped when they realised it would make it too difficult to move.[3]

Masks
The designs of the masks differ, with the masks for the Rite of Descent having a simpler, more ancient appearance. The Kagura drum mask has a pattern resembling a drum drawn on the mouth that keeps it sealed,[4] while the drum mask for the Rite of Descent appears to have scratch marks where the mouth should be. The bell mask for the Rite of Descent is cracked due to the high-pitched vibrations of the instrument.[5] Both string masks have their eyes and mouths sealed to enable the player to concentrate on the sound.[6]
The masks for the Rite of Descent had an incantation written on the inner side, which would force the wearer to complete the ritual.[3] These masks would enable the wearers to play their instruments even if they had never played them before.[7] The Organ masks used in the Rogetsu Kagura are not stated to have any special properties.
