Maya is a main character in Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir. She has been trapped in a house with many other people, and is brought into the real world by you, the player (acting as the protagonist). Remembering nothing but her own name,[1] she helps you unravel the mystery of the cursed Purple Diary in order to regain her memories, providing the player with hints as they progress.

Past

"No one can understand. I had a family. We shared a diary. It was our own world, the door that connected us."
―Maya src

At a young age, perhaps during infancy, Maya was chosen to be sacrificed in an ancient ritual called the Tokoyomi Ritual. She was raised alone, with no family or friends, her only connection to the outside world a nameless Old Woman who took care of her. She was given a purple diary by the woman, and she used it to write about her imaginary family. After a while, another "Maya" answered, and even though the girl didn't really exist, a forbidden bond formed between the two Mayas.

When Maya reached the age of 15 (18 in the English translation), the villagers decided to perform the ritual in the hope that it would save them from the plague that had nearly wiped them out. Maya's mouth and eyes were sewn shut by the Old Woman, to turn her into a |vessel for a god. However, Maya's bond with the other "Maya" acted like a crack in the vessel. When the dark spirit descended, Maya lost consciousness, and the other Maya awoke and was consumed.

Working through the other Maya, the Darkness destroyed the village, and the house was drawn inside the diary. Maya was trapped inside the house, remembering nothing but her own name. She spent her time hiding from the Woman in Black, with no memory of the connection between them.

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir

"I created her... and then... abandoned her!"
―Maya src

Maya is freed by the player, who acts as the protagonist. The two work together to solve the mysteries of the diary. Maya eventually realizes that the Woman in Black is her other half, and that the only way to end the curse is to be with her again and save her from the darkness. She feels guilty that her actions not only left her other self to suffer, but brought about the curse that caused so many others to be trapped inside the diary. She wishes to reunite with the Woman in Black, but before she can work out how, the Woman in Black finds Maya and comes to claim her. Maya fears that if it happens this way, she will be drawn into the darkness too, and the curse will continue. In order to rescue them, the player must enter the diary with the Camera Obscura and drive the darkness out of the Woman in Black.

During the second phase of the final boss fight, the Woman in Black "absorbs" Maya and takes her under her control, each taking turns to attack. During Maya's attacks, she calls out for help and begs the player to save them both. When the battle is over, Maya and the Woman in Black are reunited, and the vines binding her wrists finally break as Maya embraces her. Maya promises not to leave the Woman in Black again, and says that she will close off their world so that they will always be together. The doors swing shut, leaving the two alone within the house. Maya's final thank you to the player appears written on the blank page of the diary. (At the end of a second playthrough, this is replaced with the Woman in Black's more ominous final words: "Never escape.")

Misc. Info

  • She is the physical inversion of the Woman in Black - she has black hair, blue eyes and a white dress, whereas the Woman in Black has white hair, red eyes and black clothing. The marks on her dress are also an inverted version of the blood splotches on the Woman in Black's dress.
  • In the Japanese version of the game, the ritual is said to take place around the time of her fifteenth birthday. In the North American and European versions, her age is increased to eighteen.
  • Maya appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros for 3DS.[2]
