Rougetsu Island was once feared as "the island nearest to the underworld". However, unlike in that bygone age it seems that the Rougetsu Archipelago is no longer an insular region that shuns visitors.
There was once a great disaster on this island which almost destroyed it and caused Rogetsu Isle to become feared as a place close to the underworld. However, it has recovered from that disaster and is no longer closed off to people from outside the Rogetsu Islands.

It is said that the island was once all but wiped out by a great calamity, but opened its doors after rebuilding and recovering.
As an outsider, I had anticipated resistance to my visitation. To my surprise, the chief welcomed me gladly to the island, seemingly in the hope that I would help introduce its native culture, such as the Kagura festival, and traditional Rogetsu engravings and craftsmanship, to the outside world.

Rather than treating a visitor from afar such as myself with hostility, the head of the island seems to almost welcome me with open arms, introducing me to such precious traditions as the Rougetsu Kagura, in addition to the beautiful local crafts of the island including mother-of-pearl inlays and Rougetsu-style carvings.
I came to Rogetsu Isle to look for materials for my Camera Obscura because of the unique indigenous culture, the folklore of which is based upon the moon.

...The island’s unique beliefs are what spurred me to come here, seeking materials to further develop the Camera Obscura.
In that folklore, the sun represents the outer form of things and the moon the inner. The moon therefore represents memory, personality and the soul.

On Rougetsu Island, the moon is an object of faith.
Believing that the soul is still connected to the underworld after the body dies, they say that the moon is a symbol of that world, as well as a gateway into it.

Here, the sun represents the outward appearance visible on the surface, while the moon represents what is within. That is to say memory and personality...and thus the soul.
They have a Kagura festival where the souls of the dead return to this world, and the most important element of that festival is the masks worn by the participants.

They believe that the soul remains connected to the Other World even after one’s physical body perishes, and that the moon is like a gateway leading there. Perhaps, then, the moon itself is something like a symbol of the Other World.
The mask worn by the maiden during the Kagura is the point of contact between the living world and the world of the dead: the underworld, represented by the moon.

There is a kagura during which the souls of the dead return, and the masks of the island play a vital role in it.
A mask that connects to the underworld! There are many kinds of masks on this island, and I hope to greatly advance my paranormal research by investigating them all.

The mask worn by the shrine maiden during the kagura seemingly becomes a point of contact between our world and the Other World. That is to say the moon, where the dead reside.

...A mask that leads to the Other World. There is more than one type of mask on the island. In fact, it is said that there is a wide variety. Examination of these masks should greatly advance my research into the Other World.

There was once a great disaster on this island which almost destroyed it and caused Rogetsu Isle to become feared as a place close to the underworld. However, it has recovered from that disaster and is no longer closed off to people from outside the Rogetsu Islands.

As an outsider, I had anticipated resistance to my visitation. To my surprise, the chief welcomed me gladly to the island, seemingly in the hope that I would help introduce its native culture, such as the Kagura festival, and traditional Rogetsu engravings and craftsmanship, to the outside world.

I came to Rogetsu Isle to look for materials for my Camera Obscura because of the unique indigenous culture, the folklore of which is based upon the moon.

In that folklore, the sun represents the outer form of things and the moon the inner. The moon therefore represents memory, personality and the soul.

Believing that the soul is still connected to the underworld after the body dies, they say that the moon is a symbol of that world, as well as a gateway into it.

They have a Kagura festival where the souls of the dead return to this world, and the most important element of that festival is the masks worn by the participants.

The mask worn by the maiden during the Kagura is the point of contact between the living world and the world of the dead: the underworld, represented by the moon.

A mask that connects to the underworld! There are many kinds of masks on this island, and I hope to greatly advance my paranormal research by investigating them all.
