It is said that of the Yomotsuki family mask makers, Souetsu used the most extreme techniques.
After the Day Without Suffering, Souetsu's mask ominously disintegrated into ash.
The remains were enshrined beneath the Luminary Sanctum so that the mask could be studied.
The basic form of the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was probably created in that shrine.
Souetsu would sit before the shrine carving the mask. His high level of skill would bring him to a serene, meditative state.
Souetsu spent many long hours before the shrine, gradually nearing a polished technique, but it was not yet enough.
Recently the Director showed me a photograph, in which the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse appears.
Dr. Kunihiko Asou once visited this island to take some photographs of the Rougetsu Kagura and saw the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse made by Souetsu.

Others would not understand its truth, but I do.
I cannot understand why the photograph captured the lost Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
Did that camera capture the past, a shadow of Souetsu?
The photo is slightly blurred, but the importance and power of the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse comes through clearly enough.
I must overcome this masterpiece.
Achieve Souetsu's most earnest wish - to complete the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.

面を打つ四方月家において、
もっとも技が極まったのは
宗悦の頃だと言われている。
宗悦が打った面は、無苦の日の後、
不吉としてすべて灰となってしまった。
残っているのは、この首現堂の
地下の祠に刻まれた、面の習作だけだ。
月蝕の面の形は、あの祠で
生まれたのだろう。
あの祠に刻まれた面の前に
座っていると、宗悦の技の高み、
宗悦が達した境地の静謐さを思い知る。
祠の前で長い時間を費やし
技を磨くうちに、次第に宗悦に
近づいてきたが、まだ足りぬ。
暗雲が晴れたきっかけは、
院長が見せてくれた一枚の写真だった。
かつてこの島に来た麻生邦彦博士が、
神楽のうてなを写した写真の中に、
宗悦が打った月蝕の面が写っていたのだ。
これは、宗悦が打った月蝕の面だ。
他の人間には、わからないだろうが
私にはわかる。
なぜ、失われた月蝕の面が
写真に写っていたかはわからない。
過去を写すという射影機に、
宗悦の念が写ったか…
やや歪んだ写真ではあるが、
宗悦の到達点である
月蝕の面の凄まじさは十分伝わってくる。
私は、これを超えねばならない。
宗悦の悲願を達成し、
月蝕の面を完成させるのだ。
