I've now been able to personally observe patients with Getsuyuu Syndrome at Haibara Infirmary.
Seeing them with my own eyes, I sense something deeply unsettling about the nature of this disease.
As it progresses, diminishing memory causes a deterioration of the sense of self, culminating in the collapse of the personality.
Eventually, the patients cannot remember anything, do not respond to anything, and die.
Before it progresses to that extent, the majority of patients choose to end their own lives in some way or another.
Seeing the horrific way this disease breaks down and utterly consumes them sent a shiver down my spine.
Even Doctor Haibara himself, while he regards Getsuyuu Syndrome as an intractable disease endemic to the island, cannot grasp its true nature, and there is no definitive course of treatment.
He is confronting this disease with a variety of treatment methods, prioritizing medication while also exploring both surgical and folk remedies.
I'll be learning about them in more detail, starting tomorrow.
