The Spirit Stone Radio takes the basic concept of a crystal radio, which uses crystals in parts of its circuitry to pick up signals, and upgrades it to enable voices to be heard from the spirit realm. These voices come from crystals and other such minerals that were previously worn by people for extended periods of time. After prolonged contact, the owners' emotions become embedded in these rocks, releasing a special kind of light invisible to humans.

Such stones are referred to as "spirit stones".

According to Dr. Kunihiko Aso, sounds emitted from the spiritual realm can sometimes be heard without the aid of a radio. Premonitions, the ability to sense others, and synchronicity similar to those found in twins are all things attributable to these sounds.
