Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a full remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. It was announced during a Nintendo Direct on 12 September 2025, and released worldwide on March 12 2026.

According to the game's Steam page, "This title has undergone a complete overhaul, with improvements to everything from visuals and audio to the core gameplay systems and controls. The signature Camera Obscura mechanic, used to capture and fend off spirits, remains a key feature, now offering richer and more engaging gameplay in both exploration and combat. In addition, the new "Holding Hands with Mayu" mechanic adds a heartfelt touch, letting you experience the deep bond between the sisters like never before."

The game includes both Japanese and English audio, with texts in Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Korean.

Storyline

Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura visit a stream they remember from their childhood memories.

The area will soon be submerged by a dam. As Mio reminisces, her older sister Mayu is drawn away by a crimson-colored butterfly, leading her toward the rumored village that no longer appears on any map.

It is a village of vengeful spirits hunting for the twins girls who fled their ritual. A village of never-ending night.

As Mio tries to find Mayu and escape from the village, her actions unknowingly retrace the horrors of the past.

In the deepest reaches of the village, Mio uncovers the truth behind the "forbidden ritual that must never be witnessed."

Main Characters

Mio Amakura (天倉 澪)
The younger of the twin sisters.
Lively and cheerful by nature.

As a child, Mio blamed herself when her sister Mayu fell from a cliff and injured her leg. Ever since, she has been deeply protective of her. Together, the sisters stray into Minakami Village, a place haunted by vengeful spirits. Determined to save her sister, Mio searches for a way to escape the cursed village.

Mayu Amakura (天倉 繭)
The eldest of the twin sisters.
Quiet, reserved, and introspective by nature.

As a child, she slipped on a mountain path and injured her right leg, and to this day is unable to run as she once could. Because of this, she relies deeply on her younger sister, Mio. She has a strong supernatural sense and becomes possessed by a spirit that leads her deep inside Minakami Village.

Development

The remake is directed by Makoto Shibata, creator of the Fatal Frame Series, and Hidehiko Nakajima, a lead designer on Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water who has also worked on many of Koei Tecmo's action projects. The developers took the opportunity to redevelop the battle system, make ghosts more challenging, and explore new ways to use the Camera Obscura for exploration as well as combat. Graphics were completely overhauled, with particular attention paid to the effects of light and shadow in building atmosphere.

New areas and items have also been added to the village, so that the game will be interesting to old and new players alike. Side stories have been added, delving deeper into the stories of characters such as ghosts. Two of the new areas are Umbral Mound and Eikado Temple. Obtaining a new item called Broken Spirit Stone will unlock side stories for various characters, including Seijiro Makabe and Itsuki and Chitose Tachibana.

Gameplay

Holding hands with Mayu
This new core feature is a reworking of an old idea for Fatal Frame II that was ultimately scrapped. Taking Mayu's hand to lead and protect her emphasises the bond between the twins. While holding Mayu's hand, Mio recovers health and willpower. Sometimes, during fights, Mayu will fall over, requiring Mio to help her up.

Game Modes
Game modes from previous versions of the game (Mission Mode, Survival Mode and Haunted House Mode) are not included in the remake. However, there are still harder difficulties, including Nightmare Mode. The game also has a photo mode, similar to the Snap Modes included in the remasters of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.

Endings
The remake contains all endings from the original PS2 version, as well as the Xbox-exclusive ending. The two endings created for the Wii edition will not be included. In addition to the original endings, the remake features two exclusive new endings, accompanied by the new song, "Utsushie" by Tsuki Amano.

Using the Camera Obscura
As in previous games, the Camera Obscura allows the player to take powerful Shutter Chance and Fatal Frame shots if their timing is right. New gameplay features added in this game include:

• Focus - when focus is aligned it allows for even more powerful shots. Focus can be adjusted automatically or manually.
• Zoom - allows Mio to zoom take a photograph from a distance, or from behind cover, before a ghost has noticed her. This will trigger a fight, but allows the player to focus on more distant ghosts.
• Filters - like the lenses in Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, Filters make the Camera Obscura a more versatile tool for both combat and exploration. For example, "The Paraceptual Filter can increase the shooting distance in combat, and in exploration, it can reproduce past actions that remain as residual memories," similar to Shadow Reading in Fatal Frame V.

The Camera Obscura can be upgraded using Prayer Beads, and upgrades can be undone using Reversion Beads.

Charms
Charms are items that offer various helpful effects when equipped, such as increasing attack or defence power, or making Mio less visible to ghosts. Upon completing the game for the first time you unlock a Charm Bag for purchase in the points store, which allows more Charms to be equipped at once. Spirit stones such as Mayu's Charm, collected from exploration and battles, can be used as charms to activate special effects. Equipping Mayu's Charm, for example, will allow you to recover more health while holding hands, and reduce the amount of damage dealt by wraiths.

Grab attacks and leer attacks
Unlike the ghost hands in previous games, surprise attacks have been integrated into the beginning of a battle. Ghosts can suddenly attack when reaching for an item or opening a door; if the player is able to dodge successfully, they will be at an advantage during the ensuing fight, whereas if they are taken unawares they will take willpower damage and start at a slight disadvantage. Leer attacks can also happen during battle.

Willpower
In addition to stamina, Mio has a second gauge measuring willpower. Meeting a ghost's gaze while opening doors, or being grabbed unexpectedly while reaching for an item, will cause willpower damage. Willpower can be recharged by holding hands with Mayu.

Sprouting Wings
During combat, evil spirits may "sprout wings" and become Aggravated. While Aggravated, spirits are shrouded in crimson malice, rapidly regenerating health while attacking more frequently and with even greater strength. After dealing a certain amount of damage, spirits can be snapped out of their Aggravated state, triggering Fatal Time. You can also prevent a spirit from sprouting wings by defeating it quickly.

Twin Dolls
Throughout the village, Twin Dolls modeled after the Twin Maidens are placed as guardians against calamity. By photographing both dolls together in a single frame, you can lay the emotions bound within them to rest. With each set of Twin Dolls purified, more items will unlock in the Point Exchange.
