Souan's masks were masks in which the souls of the dead dwelled, clearly deviating from masks created by other craftsmen which were in the likeness of gods or characters from plays.
Unlike the masks made by other artisans to represent gods or ritual roles, Soan's masks had the symbolic function of holding the souls of the dead. For generations, the house of Yomotsuki has been known for its artisans of the masks used in the Rogetsu Kagura.

The family was originally involved in traditional ceremonies in a more general fashion. However, the first of the Yomotsukis to become a mask artisan was Soan.

Unlike the masks made by other artisans to represent gods or ritual roles, Soan's masks had the symbolic function of holding the souls of the dead. Through the generations, the Yomotsuki family prospered and produced many artisans, bringing us to the seventh generation and the ultimate Yomotsuki mask artisan, Soetsu.

In Soetsu's time, the masks of the house of Yomotsuki were held to have become as death and the soul themselves. They became the pride of Rogetsu Isle, even being presented to the Emperor of Japan himself. Unfortunately, at this point in the historical record the disaster called the Day of Tranquility obscures our knowledge of Soetsu's life.

And so, the details of his death failed to be passed down to modern generations.

Two generations after Soetsu, the family line was restored by Sogen, and the mask artisanship of the house of Yomotsuki was revived.
