A Curse Affecting Only Girls

In the novel, Mary is described as wearing a white apron dress and cardigan, with heavy makeup and twin-tails tied with ribbon. She has a reputation around the town, and some people even think it's bad luck to see her. She frequently stops to speak to students at the academy, and claims to be a graduate, but in truth she never passed the entrance exam. She grew up an ordinary girl in the nearby town, and after school, she entered into an arranged marriage with a man who already had a son. She was never very close to either of them, and reverted to her maiden name after her husband died. Her relationship with her stepson, Susumu, is strained. He is ashamed of her outlandish appearance, and hurt by her indifference towards his father.

When Itsuki and Risa sneak out of school to visit the restaurant, Mary approaches them and starts talking about the curse. She claims that in her day she performed it on Taruho Saginomiya, and tells Risa exactly how it is done. Later, Risa remembers that Mary seemed to know about the curse, and she, Aya and Michi ask Mary for help investigating it. Mary tells them about the old shrine near the school, where they find the Ophelia Album.

Mary's picture is one of the many pictures in the album, but hers is the only one not paired with another. She tells them that she was obsessed with Saint Loudun's Academy, and especially with Taruho Saginomiya, to the point where she attempted to curse Taruho. Taruho found out, summoned Mary to the shrine and coldly rejected her, taking her own picture and leaving Mary's by itself.

When Aya and Michi are trying to find Maya, the girl at the heart of the curse, Michi is captured by Taruho, who believes Michi is trying to interfere with her brother Takashi's true love. Taruho intends to kill Michi, but Mary, who has been secretly recording their conversation from nearby, interrupts and takes a picture of her. Taruho and Takashi flee together. Mary explains that a girl Taruho killed twelve years ago was her only friend, and ever since she has been trying to find proof that Taruho is a murderer. Her persona as an oddball stalker obsessed with Saint Loudun's was cover for her attempts to find out as much as possible about Taruho.

At the end of the novel, Mary meets Susumu outside the factory. The two seem to have become closer, as he holds her hand. She tells him that she is going to buy some normal clothes, and be more of a mother to him.
