A Curse Affecting Only Girls

Maya Tsukimori was Aya's twin sister. The two were orphans, and the Headmistress of Saint Loudun's Academy for Girls took them in when they were five. One day, she took them to the bridge near the shrine, and gave them a choice. One girl would live at the academy, attend university in Tokyo and grow up to a bright future - on the condition that the other would die. Maya, the elder, decided to sacrifice herself for Aya's sake. She gave Aya the camellia hair ornament they inherited from their mother, and allowed the Headmistress to push her into the river, where she drowned. Aya was traumatised and suppressed the memory.

The Headmistress placed Maya's photograph in the Ophelia Album, which was later discovered by Taruho Saginomiya. Wishing to comfort her brother Takashi, who was distraught after the death of his girlfriend, Taruho showed him the album and suggested he enter a ghost marriage with one of the girls in it. Takashi chose Maya, and she was called forth from the water. Her corpse, which had continued to age at the same rate as Aya, floated in the river; Takashi found her and transferred her to a glass water tank deep in the forest. Susumu Kusakabe took a photograph of her there, and it began to circulate at the academy, where people mistook it for a picture of Aya.

Maya began to appear to students at the academy and curse them: first Aya, then Kasumi, then others. Takashi sensed that she was waiting for someone and, wishing to serve her, made sure that all the photographs placed in the confessional were placed beside Maya's in the Ophelia Album, so that the girls would be spirited away and join Maya.

Aya regained her lost memories, and decided that the only way to find Maya was to curse herself. She was immediately spirited away to Maya's side, where Michi found her. Following Michi's idea, Aya cast away the hair ornament, breaking Maya's hold over her. Aya passed out, and had a dream in which she and Maya were together in a forest. Maya said she never cursed Aya, and wanted her to go on living. She took out the hair ornament and dropped it on the ground, at which point her body began to decay, and sent Aya back to the world of the living.

Fatal Frame: The Movie

As in the novel, Maya was the elder twin of Aya Tsukimori. When their parents died, they were sent into the care of the Headmistress. The Headmistress believed that offering one of the twins as a sacrifice would appease the spirit that was haunting her. When she said that one of them would have to die, Maya volunteered, to protect her younger sister. The Headmistress threw her into a water tank, where she drowned.

Aya suppressed the traumatic memory, but the two remained connected, and Maya continued to age as Aya did. Under the water, she waited to see Aya once more. At some point, her body was discovered by Takashi Asou, and he began visiting her every day, casting flowers into the water as an offering. Maya's spirit appeared every so often in the vicinity of the river, and was photographed by Susumu Kusanagi. The photo found its way to the school, and girls began using it in an attempt to make Aya fall in love with them.

Increasingly, Maya haunts the school, beckoning girls to her photo in the attic and then calling them into the forest, towards the water tank. However, Mayumi Asou believes that her brother was responsible for Maya's death, and in an attempt to protect him, she murders all the girls who make their way there.

As Aya investigates the curse, Takashi meets her in the forest and mistakes her for Maya. He carries her to the water tank and throws her in. Aya hears Maya calling to her from beneath the water, and at last her memories return. She promises to stay with Maya forever, but Maya rejects her plan, and tells her to live instead. Now that they have been able to meet again, Maya's body begins to decay, and the curse is lifted.
