Susumu Kusakabe
| ||||||||||||||||||||
Susumu Kusakabe is a character in Fatal Frame: A Curse Affecting Only Girls. His father was hit by a bicycle and killed when he was young, and ever since then his stepmother, Mary, has been his sole guardian. At the beginning of the novel, the two have a difficult relationship; Susumu is ashamed of the way she dresses, and hurt by her lack of affection for his father. Rather than spend time in their apartment, Susumu wanders the town and surrounding countryside with an old camera his father gave him, which can capture images of ghosts.
One day, while walking in the forest, he takes a photograph of a beautiful girl floating in the water. This picture somehow falls into the hands of a student at Saint Loudun's Academy for Girls. The girl in the photo is mistaken for Aya Tsukimori, and the students begin to use the picture to perform a traditional love-charm peculiar to Saint Loudun's.
Susumu is more of an observer than an active participant in the events that follow: he witnesses the cursed Kasumi floating upstream, and then finds her dismembered corpse a few days later. Towards the climax of the novel, he uses his camera to track Aya after she has deliberately allowed herself to be spirited away. In the final section, his relationship with his stepmother seems to have improved, and she makes the decision to be more of a mother to him.
Misc. Info
- Although the camera Susumu inherited from his father has some of the same special properties as a Camera Obscura, it is never explicitly named as such in the novel.
