There are records of a scientist by the name of Kunihiko Asou visiting this island during the Meiji era.
Records tell of a visit to Rogetsu Isle at the turn of the century by one Professor Kunihiko Asou.

He's credited with numerous inventions designed to communicate with the Other World, though whether any of them worked is another matter entirely. Nowadays, Dr. Asou's inventions are generally regarded as little more than pseudoscience.
He invented various devices for communicating with the dead, but their efficacy was never proven, and in modern times his theories are treated as mere pseudoscience.

Poring literature he left behind, I found many descriptions of the island's masks. His inquiry into the subject is fragmentary and at times eccentric, but at least as fascinating as it is audacious.
Reading his writings, I found that many of his thoughts were about the masks of this island. Some of his ideas are fragmented and erratic, but many are also bold and exciting.

According to Dr. Asou's theories, the masks of Rogetsu Isle were created to influence the minds of those who wore them.
According to the professor, the masks of Rogetsu Isle are designed to affect the mind of the wearer.

For example, if one sees a smiling face, they may become happier. It's human nature to assimilate what we see. (He uses the term "emotional transference".)
Humans are easily influenced in this way, like when one sees someone laughing and feels like laughing oneself. (Professor Asou's term for this is "emotional transference.") He postulates that masks refine this process, controlling the emotions of those who see them. Just as the moon represents the inner, masks represent singular states of mind.

It is said that the masks of this culture, through their exquisite workmanship, are imbued with the power to control emotions. As the moon represents the inner world, the masks seem to represent states of mind.
The professor describes his experience of seeing a girl who, despite never having so much as lifted a flute before, played a tune on one immediately after putting on a mask.

Dr. Asou claims he witnessed a girl who had no knowledge of the flute suddenly gain the ability to play after putting on a mask.
His theory is that masks either stimulate specific parts of the unconscious mind, or that they behave as a type of medium for memories.

It was as though the mask was able to stimulate unconscious areas of the brain, or perhaps even impart information by way of serving as some sort of recording medium.
The idea of masks as a medium for conveying memories is certainly intriguing. The professor further proposes that masks allow experiences to be shared in a way similar to modern wireless communication. He loses me when he starts talking about how "the ultimate shared experience is death," but the rest of his theory is most illuminating.

That's one of his more sensational ideas, but I find it fascinating He took this idea even further, suggesting that such masks could even be used to share experiences. (A phenomenon not unlike the radios of today.)
Professor Asou used the arts and materials of mask-making on Rogetsu Isle to create his Camera Obscura and the film it uses.

The ultimate sharing of personal experience, he says, would be to share the experience of death itself. I can't follow his theories very well after that, but I certainly enjoyed reading them.
The camera is in the Asou Museum. I would very much like to have a look at it and see if it truly holds such powers as are ascribed to it in this document.

Dr. Asou credits the techniques and paints used in the island's masks with inspiring new components for the Camera Obscura, especially improvements to the film.

There's a Camera Obsura kept in the Asou Museum, but if it truly possesses the powers he described, I would love to see a demonstration.

Records tell of a visit to Rogetsu Isle at the turn of the century by one Professor Kunihiko Asou.

He invented various devices for communicating with the dead, but their efficacy was never proven, and in modern times his theories are treated as mere pseudoscience.

Reading his writings, I found that many of his thoughts were about the masks of this island. Some of his ideas are fragmented and erratic, but many are also bold and exciting.

According to the professor, the masks of Rogetsu Isle are designed to affect the mind of the wearer.

The professor describes his experience of seeing a girl who, despite never having so much as lifted a flute before, played a tune on one immediately after putting on a mask.

His theory is that masks either stimulate specific parts of the unconscious mind, or that they behave as a type of medium for memories.

The idea of masks as a medium for conveying memories is certainly intriguing. The professor further proposes that masks allow experiences to be shared in a way similar to modern wireless communication. He loses me when he starts talking about how "the ultimate shared experience is death," but the rest of his theory is most illuminating.

Professor Asou used the arts and materials of mask-making on Rogetsu Isle to create his Camera Obscura and the film it uses.

The camera is in the Asou Museum. I would very much like to have a look at it and see if it truly holds such powers as are ascribed to it in this document.
