Memory and music share a deep connection.
I've seen a number of instances where music triggered old memories to resurface.
One example was a patient of mine. After the first time music aided in recalling a memory, she started playing various phrases on a piano as if she was rummaging around inside of herself.
One day, she started focusing on variations of one phrase, repeating it over and over. Little by little, she would adjust the scale. Again...and again...and again...
Whatever memory that phrase was tangled up with must have been particularly difficult to reach. There was a remarkable turnaround in her condition, though.
And then, after she got her memory back, she killed herself...
Hers was an unsuccessful case, but it does highlight that music is able to reach inner depths that words alone could never touch.
There was music like that on this island, once. It's a faint memory from when I was a kid, but they were called "lunar melodies."
There were different kinds, but the ones I'm thinking of were used in ritual prayers and festival music.
While they were mostly oral traditions, there was an old-fashioned piece of sheet music around here somewhere.
...Good thing I came back.
