Yo Haibara is a character in Fatal Frame IV. He is a murder suspect being pursued by the detective Choshiro Kirishima.
Past
Yo Haibara was born on Rogetsu Isle. His father was director of Haibara Infirmary, and his mother suffered from Moonlight Syndrome, a disease peculiar to the island. This illness led her to commit suicide.
Yo harbored a twisted love for his older sister, Sakuya. It is hinted that Ayako is Yo and Sakuya's daughter.
As an adult, Yo followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. He left the island for several years to run a clinic in Tokyo. There, he carried out medical and surgical experiments which led to the deaths of three patients. The police began to investigate Yo, but he viewed their pursuit of him with amusement, calling it a "game of hide and seek".
Before the lunar eclipse in the 1970s, Yo returned to the island. Concealed in the Hidden Room in Rogetsu Hall, he began to help his father prepare for the Rite of Descent. He transcribed the Moonsounds from ancient musical scores, and explored musical therapy for Moonlight Syndrome. He kidnapped five girls to perform as Organs in the Rite of Descent, and took them from the Kagura to the Temple of Tsukiyomi, where the ancient ceremony was to be performed. His sister performed as the Vessel, wearing the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
However, the ritual failed. The mask shattered, and Sakuya fell unconscious. She was taken to the Court of the Unhallowed, and the five girls were left in the Moonglow Cavern to recover, where Kirishima discovered them two weeks later. Kirishima had suspicions that the Haibaras had been involved in the kidnapping, but was unable to prove it.
For the next two years, Yo remained in hiding on Rogetsu Isle, continuing to work alongside his father. He hoped that Sakuya would one day wake up, and envisioned a future in which she could live peacefully with him and Ayako.
Two years after the failed Rite of Descent, his hope was rewarded. Sakuya woke up and began to roam the island, blossoming. Her resonance caused everyone who looked at her to blossom, too. Yo went up to the roof to watch events unfold from there, but he was followed by Kirishima, who had come to search for him on the island. When Kirishima emerged onto the roof, Yo stabbed him. Rather than let a murderer escape, Kirishima hurled himself at Yo, and both men fell from the roof to their deaths.
Fatal Frame IV
During Fatal Frame IV, Yo appears as a non-hostile ghost in Choshiro's chapters, repeating the events that led up to his death. Developers considered having Yo return Sakuya's mask in the ending, but decided that while Yo would be more apt for Sakuya, Choshiro made more sense for Ruka.[1]
