Karasawa Village is a quiet mountain village far from Tokyo, and the setting for most of Fatal Frame: Shadow Priestess. Sara Washizuki grew up there, in a large shrine and inn owned by her family. She and her friend Kanon Ohtori both attended Karasawa Elementary. It is near to Mount Kegare, a sacred mountain where the spirits of suicides and criminals are said to congregate.
In the manga, Professor Koutari decides to take his modern architecture seminar students on a trip to Karasawa Village to study the architecture of the area, in particular the elementary school. Upon their arrival, Sara reflects that the village has hardly changed at all since she left five years ago. Over the course of the story, it is revealed that several members of the group have connections to the village, though most were unaware of it before they arrived.
