Suicide

Suicide is the act of taking one's own life. People may take their own lives for many reasons. In Japan and China, as well as many other cultures, suicide was considered a correct response to shaming or dishonoring oneself or one's family, and in certain situations, was expected. In modern times, the high suicide rate in Japan is considered a national problem. In the Fatal Frame Series, suicide has been portrayed as a means to escape an impending disaster, as means of atonement for misdeeds, or part of an act within a specific ritual.

After the mountain is cursed, the restless spirits of those who died on the mountain lure others there and compel them to die in the same way, making it difficult to differentiate between suicides and those who are spirited away.
