Suicide is the act of taking one's own life. People may take their own lives for many reasons. In Japan and China, as well as many other cultures, suicide was considered a correct response to shaming or dishonoring oneself or one's family, and in certain situations, was expected. In modern times, the high suicide rate in Japan is considered a national problem. In the Fatal Frame Series, suicide has been portrayed as a means to escape an impending disaster, as means of atonement for misdeeds, or part of an act within a specific ritual.

The following is a list of suicides within the Fatal Frame series.

Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame II

Fatal Frame III

  • Tengai Narumi - committed suicide (probably by stabbing himself with his hatchet) in the Stained Corridor trying to stop the Rift from spreading.
  • Hisame Kuze - possibly committed suicide, as it states in her diary, "I'm going to sleep now. Forever and ever..."
  • Inverted Woman - according to the Spirit List, she threw herself off a roof.
  • Drowned Man - according to the Spirit List, he drowned himself to escape the Miasma.

Fatal Frame IV

Fatal Frame V

In Fatal Frame V, the act of suicide itself has been ritualised on Mount Hikami, where the shrine maidens attend to people who wish to end their lives by witnessing their death and allowing them to become absorbed into the holy water of the mountain. After the mountain is cursed, the restless spirits of those who died on the mountain lure others there and compel them to die in the same way, making it difficult to differentiate between suicides and those who are spirited away. Prior to the events of the game, Yuri Kozukata attempted to kill herself by jumping off a cliff, but is prevented at the last second by Hisoka Kurosawa.
