Court of the Unhallowed

The Court of the Unhallowed (called the 'Shrine of Mourning' in fan translations) is a small room in the basement of Rogetsu Hall, next to the Switchboard Room. This room was always guarded by an employee of the Haibara family, and seems to have been the site of the face-cutting ritual of the island, in which the faces of deceased islanders were cut off through fear that they would blossom. Only those who had been specially purified were permitted to enter the Court of the Unhallowed, and never on the night of the full moon.[1]
Sakuya was kept here after the failed Rite of Descent, in a comatose state between life and death. The guard keeping watch over her was instructed not to harvest her face, since she was not truly dead, but felt a powerful urge to do so. The nurse assigned to her floor, Shie Sonosaki, continued to tend to Sakuya whilst she was there, but had a persistent fear that Sakuya would wake up. Two years later her fears were realised, when Sakuya woke and broke out of the shrine.
