Tsukiyomi

Tsukiyomi (月黄泉, tsukiyomi or tsukuyomi, lunar underworld) is the term used in Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse for the gate to the underworld that appears off the coast of Rogetsu Island during the lunar eclipse. At the moment of the eclipse, the moon's dark reflection on the surface of the sea opens into a gateway. During the Rite of Descent, it was the Vessel's job to comfort the souls of the dead and guide them through the gateway and into the afterlife.
The gateway appears on the far side of the torii gate at Tsukiyomi Beach. On the night of the ritual, even residents of neighbouring islands were forbidden from going out to sea. It is said that only the eyes of the dead can see it.[1]
The design of the Temple of Tsukiyomi resembles the gateway, from the point of view of the spirits who have passed through it.
