Fatal Frame
While the Asou Family is not mentioned in the first game, there was an original plan to include a subplot involving Dr. Kunihiko Asou. This was taken out when it was thought that the extra plot would make the game too long.
Fatal Frame II
A folklorist and occultist who created the Camera Obscura and various other inventions to listen to or capture images of the paranormal. Several formative experiences in his youth caused him to dedicate his life to proving the existence of the Other World. He travelled all over Japan in pursuit of this goal, and his devices were scattered across the country. His descendants, too, appear to be spread far and wide.
The father of Mio and Mayu Amakura. While not mentioned in the game, official guidebooks state that he wandered into the Lost Village and disappeared when Mio and Mayu were very young.[1][2][3]
Fatal Frame III
Yuu Asou is a young aspiring folklorist who, just recently a month or so prior to the events of Fatal Frame III, has tragically died in a car accident. Prior to his death, Yuu had collected several books on folklore, and was helping his friend Kei Amakura out with a strange illness that seemed to be connected with a legend about a Manor of Sleep. His fiancee, Rei Kurosawa struggling with the guilt of surviving and blaming herself with Yuu's death.
Fatal Frame IV
A beautiful but headstrong and bossy young teenager, she is one of five girls who was kidnapped ten years ago and lost all her memories. Now, after the deaths of two of her friends, Misaki goes back to the island, beckoned by a mysteriously familiar girl dressed in black.
Fatal Frame V
Ren is descended from Dr. Asou through a branch family, and bears a strong physical resemblance to him. As a child, he spent time with relatives near Mount Kagiroi, where Dr. Asou grew up, and many years later he finds an original Camera Obscura stored with family heirlooms. In the box with the camera is a lock of hair, and after he touches it, Ren begins to dream of taking part in an unsettling ritual with a white-haired girl. In a book of burial photos from Mount Hikami, two pictures catch his eye: one of a scene identical to his dream, and a portrait of a beautiful woman dressed as a bride. It is revealed that both the white-haired girl and the lovely bride met Ren's ancestor when they were about to become sacrifices, and both wished him to be their husband in the afterlife through the Ghost Marriage ritual. However, neither marriage came to pass, and Ren is left to follow in Dr. Asou's footsteps and choose between the two.
Note on Spelling
In English, the name 麻生 (あそう) may be written Asou, Asо̄ or Aso, according to the translator's preference. "Aso" is the most commonly used in official translations of the Fatal Frame Series; however, "Asou" is used in Fatal Frame III and in the fan translation of Fatal Frame IV, both of which also introduce important members of the Asou family. "Asou" is also the spelling used in native Fatal Frame IV environment textures. For the sake of consistency, Zero Wiki has chosen to use the spelling "Asou" whenever the name appears, even where it may differ from official translations.
