Rogetsu Hall is a building located on Rogetsu Isle, once used as a luxurious sanatorium built with a blend of Eastern and Western styles. It was built to house patients suffering from Moonlight Syndrome, a psychological disorder endemic to the island. Ruka Minazuki explores the old sanatorium in search of her lost memories. This location is also the primary setting of Fatal Frame IV. After the Day of Tranquility, Rogetsu Hall was abandoned along with the rest of the island.

History

Rogetsu Hall was built as an extension of Haibara Infirmary, on the site of an old inn bearing the same name. In the Meiji Era, Dr. Kunihiko Asou had visited the island and stayed in the inn, and the room he used remained open to the public as the Asou Museum. In order to make room for the sanatorium, both the inn and a nearby shrine were demolished.[1]

The hall was decorated with masks and carvings and resembled a hotel, with its grand Entrance Hall, Dining Room, and central courtyard garden with a pool. It was designed to be as welcoming as possible to guests from outside the island, and certain areas remained open to the public.[2] Adjoining the aforementioned Asou museum, there was a Archive of books about psychology, metaphysics, and the island's religious beliefs. The corridor connecting Rogetsu Hall with Haibara Infirmary also contained a display of items connected with the island's history, notably a large cloudy moon carving and several masks.

In the wards, each patient had a spacious private room decorated with their own possessions. The rooms were named after months, and had door-plates decorated with floral designs inspired by the twelve suits in a pack of hanafuda cards. Only the wealthy or those with a connection to the Director were admitted. Patients from prominent families, or those who had contributed financially to the hospital, were housed on the third floor.[3] The fourth floor was set up as an isolation ward, and had only one patient room at the end of a long hallway. In the basement of the hall was a room known as the Court of the Unhallowed, where the faces of the dead were cut off to prevent Blooming.

Inspirations

According to Makoto Shibata, Rogetsu Hall was heavily inspired by an onsen ryokan owned by one of his relatives, and his own mysterious experiences there. Western-style Japanese houses from around Japan were also used as references.[4]

Misc. Info

  • The outside of the hall was in one of the first six preview images of the game to be revealed.
  • A mix of both Western and Japanese living styles were used, because the Western way of setting objects higher off the ground is more suitable for the third person over-the-shoulder gameplay that Fatal Frame IV uses.
  • The hospital has four floors, and makes no attempt to avoid using the number four when referring to the floor in notes. This is unusual for a Japanese hospital, where use of the number four is usually considered taboo, since it is pronounced similarly to the word for death.
